The cast of The Suicide Squad and writer/director James Gunn are hosting an online Watch Party before the movie leaves theaters and HBO Max.
On Aug. 30, Gunn and the cast will host a Watch Party on Twitter starting at 6 p.m. PST and 9 p.m. EST. Fans will be able to tweet along while streaming the film using #TSSWWatchParty, a week before The Suicide Squad leaves theaters and HBO Max on Sept. 5. Gunn promoted the "party" on his social media accounts, encouraging fans to join him and the rest of the cast in rewatching the film.
The Suicide Squad was released on HBO Max on Aug. 5, which was earlier than originally planned, appearing in theaters and for free on the streaming service, as opposed to its intended simultaneous release in theaters and HBO Max on Aug. 6.
The Suicide Squad set a pandemic-era box office record on its opening night despite worries of diminished theater traffic because of a rise in COVID-19 cases, though it ultimately fell short of its original box office predictions, raking in a three-day gross of $25.65 million. Despite that, the film garnered a positive response from critics and fans alike, becoming one of the best-reviewed DC Extended Universe films on Rotten Tomatoes, far above its 2016 predecessor, David Ayer's Suicde Squad, which is currently the DCEU's lowest-rated film.
Gunn's The Suicide Squad serves as a soft reboot, bringing back characters like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller while introducing new characters like John Cena's Peacemaker, Idris Elba's Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man and King Shark.
Written and directed by Gunn, The Suicide Squad is currently in theaters and on HBO Max.
