The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn confirmed his film's status as canon in the DC Extended Universe.

Gunn spoke to Collider about his experience creating the blockbuster movie about a platoon of supervillains who are deployed on a "suicide" mission to destroy a massive alien starfish. When asked if the world of his film coincided with others in DC's film universe or if it takes place on an "alt Earth" or some other realm, Gunn confirmed his work's place within the DCEU.

"It is the DCEU," Gunn said. "So it's whatever the DCEU is today and with Aquaman and The Flash and everything else, that's where The Suicide Squad is. So that is what it is." Asked specifically whether or not it shares any space with the "Henry Cavill, Superman realm," Gunn replied, "That's outside of my realm of knowledge."

As part of the official landscape first settled by superheroes like Superman, Batman and Flash, the anti-heroes of Belle Reve Correctional Center enrich the tapestry of characters inhabiting the Extended Universe. They may, however, have to cease doing so without the contributions of Cavill, who is reputedly moving on from his portrayal of the Man of Steel. Cavill's last outing as Superman was in Zack Snyder's Justice League. That hasn't stopped Idris Elba from wishing for a Superman/Bloodsport fight though.

The Suicide Squad is currently in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
