The Smurfs Conquer Central Park

Columbia Pictures has released a new photo from The Smurfs, its moderately creepy CGI/live-action adaptation of Peyo's beloved comic characters.

If you missed the teasers released in June, this new still will certainly tip you off that The Smurfs movie forsakes the traditional medieval-Europe setting for modern-day New York City. Apparently the wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) chases the little blue creatures out of their village and into a forbidden grotto, where they're transported to the middle of Central Park. Go figure.

Directed by Raja Gosnell, The Smurfs boasts an interesting cast that includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Fred Armisen as Brainy Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette, Anton Yelchin as Clumsy Smurf, John Oliver as Vanity Smurf, Paul Reubens as Jokey Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf and Wolfgang Puck as Chef Smurf. (I'm not sure who the Smurf in the kilt and sideburns is, though.) In addition to the voice actors, the film features Jayma Mays, Neil Patrick Harris, Sofía Vergara and Tim Gunn.

The Smurfs opens on Aug. 3.
