The character officially came out as gay in the Season 27 episode "The Burns Cage," written by Rob LaZebnik, based on his own teenage son coming out. LaZebnik said at the time, "I am a Midwestern guy, so I don't tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I thought, 'What better way to tell my son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?'"LaZebnik also wrote "Portrait of a Lackey on Fire" with his son Johnny, who has previously written for children's shows like Norman Picklestripes and the Paramount+ Rugrats reboot. "So often, gay romances are a subplot or alluded to or shown in some kind of montage or as a punchline," Johnny said in an interview with the New York Post. "And what I think I was really excited about, with this episode, we get to see -- without spoiling too much -- the beginning, middle and who knows how it ends of a gay relationship, of really getting into the nitty-gritty of how gay people date, how they meet, what it's like.” He also shared a tweet about the episode with the caption, "i can finally come out of the closet as a d’ohmosexual. watch a very gay episode of The Simpsons on november 21, written by me and my dad."RELATED: The Simpsons: 13 Of The Scariest Treehouse Of Horror Segments, Ranked

Garber, himself openly gay, has had a lengthy acting career across theater, film and television. He's known for appearing in major blockbusters like Titanic, Milk and Argo. Sci-fi fans will recognize him as Sidney Bristow's father, Jack, on Alias and Professor Martin Stein on The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.

"Portrait of a Lackey on Fire" will air Nov. 21 on Fox.
