"The Settlers of Catan" may be staking a claim to television and film.

Variety reports that veteran producer Gail Katz ("The Perfect Storm," "Air Force One") has acquired the right to the popular multiplayer board game.

In the game, which debuted in 1995, players assume the role of settlers on the island of Catan, where they trade and acquire resources while building cities and roads on their way to becoming the dominant community. More that 22 million games in the "Catan" series have been sold in 30 languages.

“I’ve been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it,” Katz said in a statement. “The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today. There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative.”
