A trailer for The Sandman, based on the legendary dark fantasy comic series by Neil Gaiman, has finally arrived.

The teaser trailer was released today as part of Netflix's Geeked Week, setting the mood for the highly anticipated adaptation with plenty of new footage. Tom Sturridge is front and center as the lead character Dream of the Endless, also known as Morpheus or the Sandman as well as various other names and titles, and several other cast members made appearances, some being revealed to audiences for the first time.

The Sandman is a live-action adaptation of Gaiman's horror comic series of the same name, which was first published in 1989 by Vertigo, a division of DC. Originally penciled by Sam Kieth, inked by Mike Dringenberg, colored by Robbie Busch and lettered by Todd Klein, The Sandman gathered critical acclaim and a devoted fan base over its original 75-issue run.

The comic's first story arc, Preludes & Nocturnes, tells the story of Dream's capture at the hands of humans using dark arts. After being held prisoner on the mortal plane for 70 years, Dream escapes and begins searching for his lost totems -- a helmet, a pouch of sand and a ruby -- so that he may regain his former power. Season 1 of Netflix's The Sandman, which is slated to run for a total of 11 episodes, is planned to adapt this arc, plus, in Gaiman's own words, "a little bit more."

Although The Sandman comic primarily follows the character of Dream, it is also known for incorporating a variety of characters from worldwide myths and legends, as well as delving into the human lives that Dream touches and contemplating the mysteries of dreams.

Netflix's first teaser for The Sandman showed high faithfulness to the source material, although there are also several confirmed changes. For instance, while the comic's main storyline begins in 1988, the show takes place in 2021, with Dream held captive for 105 years as opposed to 70.

In addition to Sturridge as Dream, The Sandman stars Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Patton Oswalt as the voice of Matthew the raven, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park and Donna Preston as Dream's siblings of the Endless, respectively Death, Desire and Despair. Jenna Coleman will play both Lady Johanna Constantine and Joanna Constantine, and many others will join the cast.

The Sandman will premiere on Netflix later this year.
