A new trailer for The Sandman was revealed at Comic-Con International in San Diego, bringing audiences deeper into the story in the upcoming Netflix series.

The trailer, embedded below, expands on the plot details that have been hinted at through previous promotional material: Dream, the immortal metaphysical being who rules the world of imagination and dreams, has been taken captive by humans, throwing his realm out of balance. When he breaks free, he's weakened but set on vengeance.

The first teaser trailer for The Sandman dropped on June 6. Along with still images from the show, it boasts high faithfulness to the source material, although there are also several confirmed changes. For instance, while the comic's main storyline begins in 1988, the show takes place in 2021, with Dream held captive for 105 years as opposed to 70.

The Sandman is a live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman's dark fantasy comic series of the same name, which was first published in 1989 by Vertigo, a division of DC. Originally penciled by Sam Kieth, inked by Mike Dringenberg, colored by Robbie Busch and lettered by Todd Klein, The Sandman gathered critical acclaim and a devoted fan base over its original 75-issue run.

The comic's first story arc, Preludes & Nocturnes, tells the story of Dream's capture and eventual escape. Once freed, he begins searching for his lost totems -- a helmet, a pouch of sand and a ruby -- so that he may regain his former power. Season 1 of Netflix's The Sandman, which is slated to run for a total of ten episodes, is planned to adapt this arc, plus, in Gaiman's own words, "a little bit more."

Although The Sandman comic primarily follows the character of Dream, it is also known for incorporating a variety of characters from worldwide myths and legends, as well as delving into the human lives that Dream touches and contemplating the mysteries of dreams.

The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge as Dream of the Endless, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Patton Oswalt as the voice of Matthew the Raven, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Jenna Coleman as Joanna and Johanna Constantine, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park and Donna Preston as Dream's siblings of the Endless, respectively Death, Desire and Despair.

The Sandman Season 1 will be streaming on Netflix on August 5.
