With The Sandman Netflix original series now streaming, and Season 2 officially confirmed, there has never been a better time for a refresher on the Sandman Universe and the Endless that reside in it. The series already introduced four of the Endless in Season 1, but that leaves three siblings fans have yet to officially meet.

But who, or what, are the Endless? Each Endless is an anthropomorphic embodiment of a different natural force and regard themselves as a family of sorts. The Endless exist beyond the understanding of humanity, though not beyond our reach. Often colliding with terrestrial beings as well as each other, these embodiments of universal constants are bound by a simple set of rules: Don't spill the blood of family, and don't fall in love with mortals. Of course, some rules are easier to follow than others.

Dream Is The Sandman's Central Protagonist

The King of Dreams, the Sandman, Morpheus -- no matter what name he goes by the embodiment of the imagination and subconscious mind is always going to be the most storied of all the Endless. Upon his first introduction to readers, Dream was summoned to the mortal realm by accident, caught up in a ritual meant for Death. Dream spent a long seventy years as a captive in our world, watching a dark drama unfold before him in bits and pieces before finally being freed and exacting revenge on what little legacy was left of his original tormentor. While his adventures span thousands of years, the most memorable involving humanity has, for the most part, taken place in a relatively modern era, leading to his run-ins with various other DC figureheads throughout the years.

Destiny Is the Wisest of The Sandman's Endless

Destiny as one of the Endless

The oldest of the Endless, Destiny has existed for as long as sentient beings capable of having a destiny have. Appearing as an elderly blind man with a hood over his face, Destiny sees everything all the time, the entirety of the universe being endlessly written in the tome he is chained to. The wisest and most stoic of his family, it's incredibly rare to see Destiny taken by surprise or directly involve himself in any matters whatsoever, though that isn't a rule that can't be broken when the situation calls for it.

Death Is the Oldest of the Endless In The Sandman

The second oldest of the seven, Death has quite possibly taken more different forms than any of the others, though she most often presents herself as a small goth girl. Once a pragmatic and callous entity, Death's persona has changed to that of an upbeat and gentle one. She's even taken up the ritual of spending one day of each century on Earth as a mortal. Of her brethren, she is the closest to Dream personally, and often serves as a confidant or friendly shoulder to lean on when he needs to talk.

Destruction Is the Only Sandman Endless to Abandon His Duties

Also known as Olethros, or the Prodigal, Destruction is the only one of the Endless to have abandoned their duties, having left his realm over 300 years ago. While Destruction had hoped that leaving his post would cause him to stop being the embodiment of that aspect of the universe, that was not the case. Rather, Destruction simply stopped directing the cacophony that he could at any point exert dominion over while things carried on organically without his input.

Desire and Dream Have a Complicated Relationship In The Sandman

An image of Desire with glowing red eyes and a conniving smile

The twin of Despair, Desire appears to those who glimpse it as that which they want most. As self-centered and indecisive as that which they embody, Desire is the most seemingly cruel of the Endless, taking a special delight in tormenting their kin on frequent occasions. Desire is probably the closest thing that Dream has to an active antagonist, having meddled in their brother's affairs to great despair in the past.

The Sandman's Despair Was Once Destroyed and Remade

Speaking of, Despair is Desire's twin, often takes the form of a short, misshapen gray woman. Perpetually cold and quiet, yet calm and intelligent all the same, Despair allows misery to be sewn at its natural pace while still taking joy in the misfortunes that she ultimately has dominion over. One of the first of her kind to have been destroyed and remade, Despair has never been quite clear on what exactly happened to her.

The Sandman's Youngest Endless, Delirium, Was Once Delight

Delirium Endless Sandman

The youngest of the Endless, Delirium was known as Delight before becoming something else for reasons that even Destiny is unsure of. She also holds a bevy of knowledge that the other Endless aren't aware of, which has caused some very insightful and confusing moments for her compatriots and readers alike. Delirium is very likely more collected than she appears to be, suffering more from an inability to express herself than anything else. Still, she has been known to put herself together from time to time, giving hope that Delight might still exist beneath the surface of the mania.
