Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Rookie Season 4, Episode 10, “Heart Beat,” which aired Sunday, January 2nd on ABC.

After its three-week hiatus, The Rookie finally came back with a new episode. Before the holiday break, the crime drama introduced a number of important plot lines, including Wesley’s likely disbarment, Harper’s continued custody battle and Bradford’s heartbreaking backstory. The winter finale addressed some of these issues, but it also introduced a brand-new problem. Just before the screen went dark, Bailey’s husband showed up while her and Nolan were on an important date.

Nolan met Bailey in Season 3 when she showed up at his place after getting locked out of his neighbor’s house while dog-sitting. The two of them quickly hit it off, and Bailey’s job as a firefighter gave reason for them to meet frequently. In fact, some of their best dates involved stakeouts, a Russian spy and exploding buildings. The two clearly liked each other, and in the Winter finale, Nolan decided to propose.

The Rookie Jason and Bailey

So, he took Bailey to a fancy, outdoor café. The mood was right, and music was playing, when it all stopped. Out of nowhere, a man walked up and announced himself as Bailey’s husband. “Heart Beat” picked up at that exact moment as Jason introduced himself, and although he was just released for prison, he actually seemed pretty nice. Nolan felt betrayed, but he still cared for Bailey, so he ran Jason’s name through a skip tracer, which only uncovered embezzlement crimes.

Baily, however, wasn’t having any of it. She had seen Jason’s real personality and had tried to divorce him for two years before he wound up in prison. Later in the episode, he came to Bailey’s fire station with the divorce papers that Baily had wanted for years. The whole thing felt off.

Nolan wasn’t completely satisfied with the skip tracer’s work, so while investigating a case, he asked another criminal about Jason. After some prodding, the criminal revealed to Nolan that Jason was notoriously charming but was really a cold-blooded manipulator. That offered the perfect opportunity to smash cut to Bailey apartment, where she found evidence that Jason had broken in. So, the next morning, she found him at work and told him off, saying, “If you push me, I will push back harder than you can imagine.”

The confrontation was a good idea on paper, but it also caused a lot of trouble. Shortly after, Baily was pulled over and arrested because Jason apparently planted a very large bag of cocaine in her car -- enough to charge her with a felony. Even with their problems, Nolan wanted to help Bailey because he still loved her.

At the very end of the episode, Nolan found Jason and confronted him. Of course, Jason denied involvement with the cocaine, but he clearly wasn’t disappointed that Bailey had wound up in jail. So, Nolan vowed to come after him to prove Bailey’s innocence, and next week’s episode -- “End Game” -- will feature the LAPD’s efforts to uncover Jason’s misdeeds.
