Netflix's The Punisher Began With Its Daredevil Series

Jon Bernthal debuted as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil. He went on to play the character in his own spin-off series that ran for two seasons on the streaming service before it, along with the rest of the MCU Netflix shows, were canceled. With characters from Daredevil making more prominent appearances in the MCU, including Charlie Cox reprising Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk and Vincent D'Onofrio playing Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin in Hawkeye, fans have wondered if characters like Castle will follow suit.

Bernthal's return as the Punisher was confirmed in March 2023, with the actor joining the cast of Born Again alongside Cox, D'Onofrio and Sandrine Holt, taking over the role of Vanessa Fisk from Ayelet Zurer. Controversially, Daredevil veterans Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson aren't expected to reprise their respective roles as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. New cast members include Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Nikki M. James, Michael Gaston, Arty Froushan and Clark Johnson in undisclosed roles.

Before Born Again, the stories of Daredevil and the Kingpin will continue in Echo, a spin-off from Hawkeye following Alaqua Cox as deaf assassin Maya Lopez, who leaves New York City to return to her hometown in Oklahoma and reconnect with her Native American roots. Producer Stephen Broussard discussed the unique tone of the series, comparing it to the Halloween special Werewolf By Night. "I don't want to say too much because there's not a whole lot out there in the world," he said, "But it feels very grounded, it feels very spiritual in ways that feel fresh for us. Alaqua as the lead is incredibly compelling. I'm sort of hard-pressed to think of something that it feels like outside in the broader realm of the MCU, let alone within what we've done here. So stay tuned on that really cool stuff." The series will release on Nov. 29, 2023.

Daredevil: Born Again is slated to premiere in early 2024. All episodes of The Punisher are available to stream on Disney+.
