The Promised Neverland is one of the most popular anime shows that released last year. It follows the orphans of Grace Field House as they try to escape the woman they called their mother and the orphanage they called their home. They learned that Grace Field House is actually a farm and that they are being used as meat.

The series has a lot of interesting characters, with one of the most beloved being Ray. Though all of the characters have lived tough lives, Ray's story is one of the most tragic. There are many things that fans should remember about him before the second season releases.

10 Love Of Reading

The Promised Neverland Ray

While the other orphans love playing games such as tag and hide and seek with each other, Ray prefers to watch his siblings while reading a book. Ever since he was born, he had a fascination for reading and wanted to learn everything that he could from the stories at Grace Field House. When they were younger, Norman got sick.

Isabella told the other children to stay away from him until he felt better. However, Emma refused to stay away and didn't think she had to. Ray told her she wouldn't catch his cold because he read that idiots aren't able to get sick. Even then, he loved to read and it helped him a lot when he planned his escape.

When Conny was "adopted", she forgot her favorite stuffed animal, Little Bunny. Ray told Emma and Norman that they had enough time to bring the toy back to her. Knowing that Isabella wouldn't be happy if she found out they stepped outside, they snuck to where they thought they would be. However, instead of giving Little Bunny back to Conny, they found their little sibling dead.

They quickly learned that Isabella and the demons were using Grace Field House as a farm and began to plan their escape. Ray knew what would happen and needed them to learn the truth so he could save them.

8 A False Betrayal to earn Isabella's trust

After Ray started working with Norman and Emma in order to escape, they also informed Don and Gilda about what was going on. They soon found out that there was a traitor among the five of them. In order to figure out who the traitor was, Norman hid a rope that the group needed to use. He told Don that it was behind his bed and Gilda that it was in the ceiling of the bathroom on the second floor.

However, this was actually what he told Ray, while he gave the other two different locations. After checking all of them, the rope was missing behind Norman's bed, proving that Ray really was the traitor. However, this was all part of his plan in order to earn Isabella's trust as his true loyalty had always been with Norman and Emma.

7 His Escape Plan

Ray had planned his escape for years. He agreed to join Isabella and become her spy in order to learn as much information as he could about the demons and the farm. With this info, he figured out exactly what needed to be done in order to escape.

However, he always put Emma and Norman above himself and wanted to make sure that they would survive. When he was finally ready to leave with them, he had them bring Little Bunny to Conny.

6 Created a device to remove trackers

In return for being Isabella's spy, she gave Ray nearly anything that he wanted. In order to make it seem like he was curious about objects from the outside world, he asked for gifts that wouldn't cause any suspicion.

For example, he asked for a camera and pretended that he wanted to take photos. However, he actually disassembled everything he got in order to create a device that he could use to remove the trackers implanted in the orphans' ears.

5 He remembers everything since his birth

When asked how he learned so much, Ray explained that he never lost his memories as a baby. Most people have infantile amnesia, which causes them to forget everything that happened at the beginning of their lives.

However, Ray remembered his birth and seeing things that he wasn't supposed to know about. The lies he was told were different from what he remembered and he had actually planned the escape for the majority of his life.

4 Ray gave up all hope after Norman was "adopted"

Emma and Ray

After Norman was "adopted" and supposedly killed, Ray gave up all hope of escaping, not seeing the point in doing so without him. When Emma, Don, and Gilda asked him what they should do, he decided that they should continue on without him.

He seemed to have decided that everything he worked for was for nothing. However, he actually had one last plan that would allow his siblings to leave.

3 Ray was ready to burn himself alive

In his last attempt at saving his family, Ray was ready to burn himself alive on his twelfth birthday, the day that he would have been "adopted". He was going to set all of Grace Field House on fire, giving everyone the chance to escape.

He poured gasoline onto himself, shocking Emma as the two of them could have had their final conversation. He told her that he refused to be feasted upon and that he would finally defeat the demons by killing himself. However, as he lit a match and dropped it, he was saved.

Before Norman died, he made sure that Emma would carry out his final plan. Knowing that Ray would put the others before himself, Norman anticipated that he would set himself on fire. Being prepared to stop him, Emma caught the match just in time. She then revealed that she never gave up and that she had Don and Gilda tell the other orphans about what was going on.

Everyone that was old enough to be harvested had helped plan the escape and made sure that Ray would join them. Shocked that they found a way to survive without using him as a sacrifice, he finally found his freedom.

1 Ray is Isabella's Son

Ray & Isabella _ The Promised Neverland

At the end of the first season, it was revealed that Ray really was Isabella's son. He had remembered the lullaby she hummed throughout the series back when he was in her womb. One day, she heard him humming it and was shocked to know that she was being forced to kill her own child.

When he asked her why she gave birth to him, she replied that she did it to survive longer than anyone else. She was able to see her son escape the orphanage she never thought she would be able to, being an orphan of Grace Field House herself, and hopes that they'll stay safe in season two.
