As with any suspenseful anime, the first season of The Promised Neverland raised more questions than it answered. From the moment Emma and Norman discover they’re being raised to be fed to strange, demonic creatures to their successful escape from their lifelong home, new mysteries continue to crop up.
This sets fans up for a promising second season, which will hopefully increase the stakes and give viewers answers to the questions they've been asking since episode one.
Here are 10 questions we have for the second season of The Promised Neverland.
10 What's Waiting For Them Beyond The Wall?
The first season of The Promised Neverland ended with Emma and her companions finally escaping the orphanage they'd lived in for so long. That orphanage was walled off, and it's unclear what's waiting for the group in the world outside.
The final shot of the season shows them looking out at... something. What the landscape of this world looks like is unclear, as is the sociological structure. Do more orphanages and villains await the characters, or is there another way of life? It's also possible they're facing nothing but wilderness. The possibilities are endless, and there are so many questions the anime needs to answer about the world. Hopefully, we'll get more insight when season two begins.
9 Is Norman Actually Gone?
Before Emma and the others escape, Norman sacrifices himself in order to ensure their plan isn't discovered. He goes along with being "sent away" -- or more accurately, being taken and fed to monsters -- insisting that he's lived a good enough life and is ready to die.
And fans are meant to believe that Norman did die, but we never actually see a body. The last we see the character, he enters a room with a stunned expression on his face. Could he resurface later on in the series? It seems possible. After all, the rule is that you can't write off a character until you see a body. Plus, the writers need some way of telling us what had Norman so amazed.
8 What Will Isabella Do Now?
The final episode of The Promised Neverland reveals an all-new side to Isabella, who previously had seemed like a completely self-interested character. After reflecting on her own experience as an orphan, however, Isabella stands aside while Emma and the others make their escape. She then returns to the remaining children, presumably to be scolded and carry on.
Given her decision, though, fans have to wonder what's next for the character. Will she resume her role as the anime's antagonist and aid in the search for Emma and the others? Or will she find more subtle ways to help them stay missing?
7 Who Is Giving The Mothers And Grandmothers Their Orders?
This is a question viewers have an answer to already, though it's not a very in-depth one. It's clear the monsters Emma and Norman glimpse during the anime's first episode are the ones running the operation, but fans still don't know who -- or what -- these creatures are.
There are many questions The Promised Neverland needs to answer about these demons, from why they eat children to how they came to exist in the first place. Given that they set the plot into motion, it seems reasonable to assume we'll start to learn more about them going forward -- especially if they'll be pursuing our young heroes.
6 How Many Other Orphanages Are Out There?
It doesn't take long for Emma and the others to uncover the fact that Gracefield House is one of many orphanages raising children to become demon food. The existence of the Mothers and Grandmothers proves as much, but we don’t know how many other homes like Gracefield House exist.
If the world of The Promised Neverland is about to expand, it seems likely Emma and the others will find out how large this system actually is — and maybe even run into a few other children or mothers going forward.
5 Will Emma Ever Return For The Younger Orphans They Left Behind?
At the end of season one, Emma decides to take Ray's advice and leave the younger children behind while they escape. She does, however, vow to come back for them later. When she'll do so remains to be seen, and that's assuming she and the others survive long enough to find their way back.
In Emma's promise is also the implication that she'll be dismantling this system they're a part of. After all, how can she and Ray hope to return for the kids when the monsters, mothers, and grandmothers are all on high alert? One can assume Emma will need to learn more before rushing in to save them -- and that's if she manages to save them at all.
4 Who Is Ray's Father?
It’s revealed during the first season of The Promised Neverland that, unlike the other children at Gracefield House, Ray is Isabella’s biological child. He came to be through artificial insemination, but that means he must have a father as well.
It’s unclear whether the other half of Ray’s parentage will be relevant to the story, but if it is, we could discover who Ray’s father is — and whether he had any involvement in this wicked system they’ve been in.
3 Will They Find The Person Who Left The Morse Code Messages?
While planning their escape, the orphans discover that messages have been left in all of the books in Gracefield House. Written in Morse Code, these help them to escape — but we never learn much about who left the codes for them.
Could we meet this person at some point during season two? And is there some sort of resistance waiting for them outside Gracefield House? It would certainly aid them in their mission to save all the other kids if there was.
2 Will Everyone Who Escaped Survive?
In a series like The Promised Neverland, it seems inevitable more characters will lose their lives going forward. One of Ray's biggest concerns about taking so many orphans with them when they escaped was that it would make them more noticeable targets -- and he could very well still be right about that.
Emma and the others have no idea what's waiting for them on the other side of that wall, and it's very possible their enemies will begin picking them off one by one.
1 Can They Actually Top Their First Season Opening?
The opening for the first season of The Promised Neverland is one of the most catchy anime theme songs out there, and it's going to be difficult for season two's to compare. "Touch Off" by UVERworld is undoubtedly a bop, and fans have to wonder how the series creators will choose a new opening that lives up to it.
Another song by UVERworld would likely do the trick, but it's also possible viewers will get something darker this season. That would match the tone going forward, especially if the series becomes more serious from here on out.
