Ever since The Promised Neverland aired its chilling first season in Winter 2019, the series has garnered much attention, even more so with the manga's conclusion this summer and a live-action film set to release in Japan this December. With expectations set from a psychologically thrilling first arc, excitement for the second season is at an all-time high, so here is everything we know about it right now.
The Promised Neverland's Story So Far
The 12-episode first season covered the entirety of the manga's escape arc, wherein Emma, Norman and Ray discovered the truth of how they and their brethren at Grace Field House have been raised as cattle to one day be shipped off as food for demons. While Emma and Norman were discovering the truth about Grace Field House and their mother Isabella for the first time, it's revealed that Ray has known for years and has been acting as a double agent, spying on the other kids to get information and tools from Isabella.
The three heroes faced hardship, attempting to come up with a solid plan to escape and outsmart Isabella, who goes to great lengths to keep them in line. Emma was insistent on taking the other kids with them, but Ray was convinced that the younger children would only hinder them. Norman found a compromise to take all the kids over age six to save them from being shipped whereas anyone younger would be guaranteed a few more years of life as per the system they've been subjected to. Ray's years of preparation set the groundwork for them, Norman came up with their final plan and Emma led and executed the plan flawlessly to successfully escape Grace Field House.
What Fans Can Expect of The Promised Neverland Season 2
While Season 1 kept the characters isolated to the confines of the House, Season 2 will see them exploring the wider world of demons. Furthermore, Norman was shipped off before he could escape, so Emma and Ray will be leading the escapees themselves. They must explore unknown territory, trying to survive amongst an entire species that wants them dead. The children left behind, like Phil, have a minimum of two years before they can be shipped, so Emma and the others only have two years to secure their futures.
After the big escape, the characters are exhausted but still have a fighting spirit. They've lost so much and have known so little about the world, but must now fend for themselves. Emma's optimism is a great morale boost, but how will she do when faced with vicious demons? Ray has just been talked out of committing suicide, but now he needs to solidify himself with a new resolve to keep living. Every character will need to face the harsh reality of their situation as they fight day-to-day. They know nothing about the outside world, so the journey ahead will be a trial and error process with their lives and their freedom at stake.
The Promised Neverland Season 2's Trailer
While an official trailer for the second season has yet to be released, two official teasers have been released. In the first, Emma expresses that they finally made it outside, but escaping was only the first step as the cost for freedom is high. In the second teaser, old words from Norman is recalled as a reminder of hope and of what's at stake. Emma knows that they have to fight to survive, resolving to create their own hope to survive.
The Promised Neverland Season 2's Cast & Crew
Season 2 will adapt the original story by author Kaiu Shirai and artist Posuka Demizu. Studio CloverWorks (Darling in the Franxx, Bunny Girl Senpai, The Millionaire Detective) will return to animate alongside Mamoru Kanbe (director) and Kazuaki Shimada (character designer). Voice actors Sumire Morohoshi (Emma), Mariya Ise (Ray), Lynn (Gilda) and Shinei Ueki (Don) will also be returning.
The Promised Neverland Season 2's Release Date
Season 2 was originally scheduled as part of the Fall 2020 season but was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It will now debut on January 7th, 2021.
