Ray is one of the main characters, and arguably the most important, in The Promised Neverland. He was able to trick Emma and Norman into seeing that the orphanage they lived in was actually a farm and that their mother was working for a group of demons. From there, he helped them escape. He was even willing to burn himself to death in order to achieve that goal, which he planned to do his entire life since he had memories from before he was even born. Luckily, he was able to escape and vowed to live in order to help his entire family survive in the Demon World.

Despite being such a vital character to the manga, there are a lot of things that fans don't know about him, especially those who have only seen the anime, due to so much being cut out of it. Here are ten things most fans wouldn't know about him.

10 He Was Born On January 15, 2034

On January 14, 2046, Ray spoke with Emma in what he thought would be his last conversation. As it was a few minutes before midnight, he told her that the following day would be his birthday, the day that he would be shipped since he would turn 12 years old, which was the longest that any child could stay at Grace Field unless they were chosen to become a mother. This means that Ray was born on January 15, 2034.

9 Kaiu Shirai Relates To Him

Kaiu Shirai is the author of The Promised Neverland. During an interview that was in the special edition of the 13th volume, Shirai was asked which character from the manga was the most relatable to him. He revealed that due to how extreme and desperate he could get, Ray was the character that he could connect with the most.

8 He Almost Had A Different Design

Posuka Demizu is the illustrator of The Promised Neverland and had a lot of ideas for the designs of the characters. One of the features that makes Ray stand out among other characters is that his hair covers his left eye.

This was an idea that Demizu doodled after drawing other versions of him, such as the one in the image above. She thought that it might make him more popular but also thought of getting rid of it. Luckily, Shirai thought it was a great idea, and it clearly was.

7 He Was The First Grace Field Kid To Grow Up

One of the most interesting differences between the anime and the manga is that the manga reveals a lot more about the Demon World, making it a greater fantasy. When Emma and Ray searched for the Seven Walls, an important part of the story that was removed from the anime, their ages drastically changed, with Ray becoming an elderly man that forgot what he and Emma were trying to do. Luckily, Emma saved him. He may have been the oldest kid from Grace Field to escape, meaning that he'd be the first to become an adult anyway, but nobody expected him to age so quickly.

6 He Read Every Book In Grace Field

Grace Field had a lot of books for the children to read. In fact, they were very important in the beginning of the series since without them, the kids would have never found out who William Minerva was. From a young age, Ray started reading these books. Before his conversation with Emma on the day before his 12th birthday, he read the only book he hadn't read yet, completing the collection before he left.

5 Most Of His Interests Were Fake

Though Ray read all of the books in Grace Field, he never had any interest in reading. He only did it so his brain would get stronger, making him more valuable to the demons. He did the same thing when getting rewards that he would used in order to make a device that could nullify the trackers that were in the kids' ears.

For example, in order to make it so Isabella wouldn't suspect why he wanted a camera, Ray pretended to have an interest in photography. All his life, the only thing he was interested in was protecting his loved ones.

4 He Convinced Norman And Emma To Go To The Gate When They Were Young

The first scene in the anime is when Ray, Emma, and Norman were very young and went to the gate, something no child in Grace Field was supposed to do. The three talked about whether or not it was actually dangerous to go there and what they would do if they ever left the orphanage. What most fans don't know about, however, is why the three went there in the first place. When Ray started to pretend that he was interested in reading, he didn't spend as much time with Emma and Norman as they used to. Wanting to be with him, they agreed to do whatever he wanted, and he decided to go there.

3 He Is A Good Cook

After the kids escaped and met Mujika and Sonju, Ray felt that it was important to learn how to cook. Mujika taught him how to do it and his siblings thought that he was an amazing chef. In the 12th side scene of the manga, he served his siblings diluted soup for breakfast and showed them how to make it. In order to add flavor, he used herbs that Mujika gave them and nuts they got from the forest. The children once again thought that his cooking was delicious.

2 He Was Originally Going To Die

TPN Ray about to burn himself

Though he ended up being a main character throughout the entire series, it was revealed in the special edition of the 13th volume that Ray was originally going to die. Seeing as how he nearly burned himself down with Grace Field in retaliation against Isabella and the demons, he could have died before his siblings even escaped. Throughout his adventures in the Demon World, there were many other times where he could have been killed by demons, but luckily, he survived as the series wouldn't have been as good without him.

1 He Found Happiness In Being Alive

Despite planning to commit suicide and hating his life while he was in Grace Field, Ray ended up finding happiness in being alive by the end of the series. When the children returned to Grace Field and spoke with Isabella about going to the Human World, she was hesitant to join them, feeling like she shouldn't be forgiven. However, Ray told her that he was glad to be alive because he can atone for his sins and clear his conscience. He found a reason to live in helping his family, knowing that it was wrong that he was going to leave them to die before Emma saved them.
