In May, Showtime opens the doors to Penny Dreadful, its latest attempt to enter the horror arena. Ahead of the premiere, the cable network has released a new, full trailer for the period thriller — but "full" is an odd word to use, considering the emptiness on display throughout the two-minute tease.

Make no mistake: The use of "emptiness" isn't a knock against the trailer. In fact, it's a badge of honor, as the Penny Dreadful footage leans on the sounds of silence to up the ante on bone-chilling dialogue and imagery. Grating bowstrings sound out occasionally as monsters stalk and sulk in the shadows, bathing in blood when appropriate. If this trailer indicates the tone of Penny Dreadful, then horror viewers are in for a nice, new, weekly treat when the Showtime series premieres.

Penny Dreadful premieres on May 11 at 10PM ET. It stars Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Reeve Carney and more.
