The Past Was Close Behind: "We'll Never Forget You Supergirl...Until We All Forget You Right Away."

This feature spotlights moments, exchanges, etc. from older comics that take on a brand new light when read in concert with later comic books. Here is the archive of previous installments.

Based on a suggestion by reader Austin B., we take a look at everyone talking about how they will never forget Supergirl and her sacrifice in Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 (by Marv Wolfman, George Perez and Jerry Ordway)...

In Crisis #7, Supergirl sacrifices herself to save her cousin, Superman...

It was an awesome moment, to be sure, and everyone was very proud of her sacrifice.

Batgirl specifically gave a speech talking about how she will NEVER be forgotten...

And, of course, she was then erased from continuity as soon as Crisis was finished.

She even appeared in a famous story in Christmas With the Superheroes #2 (by Alan Brennert and Dick Giordano) referencing the fact that no one even knows she ever existed...

Damn, this is one of the harsher Past Is Close Behinds.

Still, thanks for the suggestion, Austin!

If YOU folks out there have a good suggestion for some hindsight hilarity, feel free to write in at bcronin@comicbookresources.com
