The Orville creator Seth MacFarlane wants a fourth season of the sci-fi series as much as the fans do.

In an interview with TV Line, MacFarlane was asked about the possibility of The Orville returning to Hulu. He answered that there was "50-50" chance the show would be picked up but added that all three seasons being streamed on Disney+ might help its odds. "My hope is that when the show drops on Disney+, the people who haven't yet discovered [The Orville] will suddenly give it a chance," MacFarlane said. "That's a potential game changer for us." He also mentioned, "I will say that I get as emotionally invested in the show as any of the fans, so I will find a way to do it if there is a Season 4."

Created by and starring MacFarlane, The Orville began its run on Fox in 2017. Originally advertised as a more comedic parody of Star Trek, the series soon moved past those roots and began telling stories rooted in sci-fi speculation and character drama. When the show was renewed for its third season, it eventually moved to Hulu and added the subtitle New Horizons.

MacFarlane added his hope that the wider availability Disney+ provides will change viewers' predetermined ideas of The Orville. "I think that creatively and audience-wise when people sit down and give the show a chance, it upends their expectations," he said. "The biggest burden with the show is preconceptions. People think it's one thing -- there are people out there who think it's a sitcom -- and when they sit down to watch it they realize it's something completely different. Once you get people's eyeballs on it, the show does the work, it speaks for itself, and people tend to be hooked."

In addition to The Orville, as well as his long-running animated sitcoms Family Guy and American Dad!, MacFarlane is also developing Ted, a TV series prequel to his 2012 comedy film. The story will take place in 1993, with John Bennett and his best friend, a magical talking teddy bear (voiced by MacFarlane), making their way through high school. "It's a piece of Ted's life in between what you saw in the opening titles of the movie and in the opening montage, and where we find him with Mark Wahlberg that’s a part of that story we haven’t told yet," MacFarlane said about the series. "It turns out that it’s a pretty ripe area to draw from."

The Orville stars MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer, Adrianne Palicki as Commander Kelly Grayson, Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr. Claire Finn, Scott Grimes as Lt. Gordon Malloy, Peter Macon as Lt. Cmdr. Bortus, Jessica Szohr as Lt. Talla Keyali, J. Lee as Lt. Cmdr. John Lamarr, Mark Jackson as Isaac and Anne Winters as Ensign Charly Burke.

All three seasons of The Orville are available to stream on Hulu and will arrive on Disney+ on Aug. 10.
