Netflix's roster for its 2023 movie releases includes Jung_E, Your Place or Mine and A Family Affair. Those originals will premiere throughout the year, along with some of the streaming giant's most anticipated series. But fans of the 2020 action film The Old Guard are disappointed in the lack of news surrounding its sequel's release date.

Based on the comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, The Old Guard follows a group of immortal warriors who fight evil. It stars Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mattias Schoenaerts, all of whom will return for the sequel. But what fans really want to know is when The Old Guard 2 will be released and what a lack of news means for the highly anticipated sequel.

The Old Guard 2 Is Missing from Netflix's 2023 Roster

For the past couple of years, in January, Netflix has announced its upcoming roster of films. This roster is meant to garner attention for the platform's originals, which have gained more traction within the entertainment world thanks to award-winning films like Roma and The Power of the Dog. But the original film slate for this year showed a distinct absence of The Old Guard 2, which has set to release in 2023.

If the Netflix roster contains all the original films set to hit the service this year, then one can assume The Old Guard 2 will not be released in its original window. While this is certainly disappointing, there might be some valid reasons for this delay. Theron, who plays Andy, revealed she sustained injuries while performing stunts for the sequel and needed surgery. There was also a fire that affected filming. Those incidents and a change in director from the first film are certainly good explanations for what appears like a delay.

Why The Old Guard Deserves a Sequel

While Netflix hasn't done much to promote or announce news regarding The Old Guard 2, the film absolutely deserves a big release. The Old Guard film and comic series created a groundbreaking story about humanity. The characters are diverse, coming from different periods and backgrounds, united in their cause to help humanity. There's also excellent queer representation, notably between Joe (Kenzari) and Nicky (Marinelli). The Old Guard even explores darker themes of mortality, despair and moral grayness, as the group's use of violence can contradict their goals.

As action movies are one of the most popular genres, it's important to see women characters like Andy and Nile (Layne) take charge. While they aren't the first female action stars, their goal is to protect vulnerable people, and their combat skills make for great entertainment and a fascinating study of women and their place in violence. And both The Old Guard and The Old Guard 2 feature female leads and directors, which reflects the strength of these characters and their motives.

The Old Guard sequel is absolutely deserved, as the first film delivered an interesting group of characters, well-choreographed fight scenes and an intriguing plot full of action, suspense and discussions on mortality and morality. However, Netflix has been quiet about The Old Guard 2 news, including an updated release date, making it safe to assume that the film isn't releasing in 2023. That might change, but whatever the case, The Old Guard 2 deserves as big of a rollout as any other Netflix original. In the meantime, fans can catch the stars of The Old Guard in other Netflix releases, including Theron in The School for Good and Evil and Kenzari in What Happened to Monday.
