Twitter account revealed The New Mutants received a PG-13 rating, tweeting, "Fox's THE NEW MUTANTS has been rated PG-13: violent content, some disturbing/bloody images, some strong language, thematic elements and suggestive material...all involving people that were teens when this was filmed, but are now adults."RELATED: The New Mutants Can't Escape in New Promo

Exhibiting a horror film tone, the first trailer for The New Mutants promised something different from any previous X-Men movie. This darker tone also left some wondering if The New Mutants would receive an R-rating to allow the horror themes to be pushed even further. However, director Josh Boone recently shot down any rumors that an R-rating was ever considered for The New Mutants.

One of the most popular X-Men character-based films to receive an R-rating was 2017's Logan, which saw great success and critical acclaim. Other R-rated comic book-based films to do well in theaters include 2010's Kick-Ass, 2016's Deadpool, 2018's Deadpool 2 and 2019's Joker.

The New Mutants will tell the story of several young mutants who find themselves in a mysterious secret facility where their worst fears come to life. The movie began filming in 2017 and would eventually receive a 2020 release date by Disney.
