Magik is Illyana Rasputin, the sister of Colossus and a Captain of Krakoa. Her life has been a long strange trip. Kidnapped as a child by the demon Belasco and taken to the realm of Limbo, she would escape as a teenager (although years hadn't passed since her kidnapping) with the mutant ability to teleport anywhere and prodigious magical skill.

She would join the New Mutants before being de-aged and would die of the Legacy Virus, before eventually being resurrected, re-joining the New Mutants and then becoming a member of the X-Men. This list is going shed some light on some things that need to be known about her.

10 The First Time She Comes To America, It's As A Kidnapping Victim

As a young girl, Magik couldn't get away from being kidnapped. Like her older brother, the X-Men's Colossus, she grew up in Russia and the first time she came to America, it was as an unwilling pawn in the villain Arcade's game.

Arcade wanted the X-Men to fight Doctor Doom on his behalf and he figured the best way was blackmail. He kidnapped the young Illyana and held her hostage, but the X-Men were able to rescue her. This wouldn't be the last time she was kidnapped.

9 She Had Her Own Miniseries

Illyana was kidnapped by Belasco in Uncanny X-Men #160. When she returned, she was seven years older, her mutant powers activated and a powerful sorceress. This wasn't explained until her December 1983 miniseries Magik.

The four-issue miniseries would chronicle her time in Limbo as she learned to survive the demonic realm. It would go into her magical training, the manifestation of her mutant powers, and end with her challenging Belasco for lordship of the dimension.

8 The Limbo Versions Of Storm And Kitty Pryde were her mentors

While trapped in Limbo, Belasco would do everything in his power to corrupt the young Illyana. He would teach her the darkest of magics to corrupt her soul, which creates bloodstones that he needs to gain power. However, she had some people fighting to keep her soul pure while she was there.

In Limbo, she was trained in white magic by Limbo's version of Storm, who had lost her mutant powers, and Kitty Pryde, who taught Illyana how to fight. Using what she was taught, she was able to depose to Belasco and become the ruler of Limbo, before returning to Earth and joining the New Mutants, the next generation of X-Men.

7 She Can Travel Through Time

Magik's mutant teleportation powers are second to none. She can teleport to other dimensions and anywhere in the world. Once, she messed up her one of her teleport disks and went back in time to ancient Egypt. While there, she met an ancestor of Storm.

Together, the two of them defeated an evil sorcerer who was trying to steal Magik's Soulsword for his own terrible purposes. Time travel is not a power she's used much as a member of the X-Men, but it's still impressive that she can do it.

6 Her Death Inspired Colossus To Be A Guinea Pig For The Legacy Virus Vaccine

The Legacy Virus was a disease that targeted mutants. It usually struck after a mutant's powers manifested, but in Illyana's case, it hit her after she had been de-aged, but before her powers came back. She would be taken to the X-Mansion for treatment as the X-Men feverishly searched for a cure, but eventually succumb to the virus.

Her death would affect Colossus heavily. He would leave the X-Men and join Magneto's Acolytes before eventually joining Excalibur and then rejoining the X-Men. Eventually, Beast would create a vaccine for the virus, but it would kill the person who took it when they first used their mutants powers, circulating the cure through the planet's atmosphere. Colossus took the vaccine in memory of his sister, ending his life. For a time.

5 Belasco Brings Her Back To Life

Belasco Cropped

After seeing a version of her still alive in the House Of M universe, Belasco realizes he wants her around again, so he uses a spell to capture the parts of her soul that are still in Limbo to bring her back to life. She doesn't have her full soul, yet, though. She saves and then imprisons a group of young X-Men.

She goes through a long period of being consumed by her dark side before she is able to get her entire soul back and become her old self, but many of the young X-Men don't trust her anymore because of her actions before getting her soul back.

4 She Was Imprisoned By Cyclops But Still A Member Of The X-Men

After a mission to Limbo with the reformed New Mutants where she put her teammates in danger in a scheme to get revenge on the Elder Gods of Limbo, Cyclops decided that she shouldn't be free to do what she wanted. While she never apologized for her actions, she accepted his decision.

However, Cyclops realized that he needed her power in the X-Men. Mutants were on a vulnerable position at this time, so Cyclops formed an X-Men team with some of the most powerful mutants left on Utopia. Magik would accompany the team on missions then go back to her cell.

3 Her Time As A Phoenix Host Damaged Her Mutant Powers

When the Phoenix Force came to Earth, Magik was one of the five X-Men who became a host to it. Things would go badly for her and the other X-Men, as the great corrupted them all. She was especially susceptible to corruption because of her past and her and Colossus were two of the first to lose their increased powers.

After the Phoenix situation was dealt with, her and the other hosts powers had diminished significantly. However, Magik's ability to use the energies of Limbo had increased significantly, more than making up for her diminished mutant abilities.

2 She Was Able To Defeat Dormammu

In the Marvel Universe, there are few mystical threats more potent than Dormammu. He's so powerful that even Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, can't just bull his way through a fight with the Dread One. It takes skill and finesse.

Dormmamu pulled Magik and the X-Men into Limbo and revealed that her enhanced magical ability was destroying Limbo. The team is able to hold back the demonic hordes before Magik sends them away and absorbs all of Limbo's mystical energy, using it to defeat Dormammu, but at the cost of the dimension.

1 She Becomes A Student Of Doctor Strange

After absorbing Limbo, Magik goes back in time. She apprentices herself to a past version of Doctor Strange, saying that she needs to learn more about magic so that she can control her vast abilities better. This past version of Doctor Strange agrees and she learns at his feet, eventually helping him in his battle against the Empirikil, a science cult focused on destroying magic in all dimensions.

Eventually, once she regained access to her full powers, she would use what she learned to completely recreate Limbo and after the release of the Terrigen Mists, she and the X-Men would make their new base of operations there, rescuing mutants in danger of exposures to the harmful Mists.
