The Munsters has been a passion project for Zombie, who is a life-long fan of the original television series. When the film was officially announced in June 2021, the director said that he had "been chasing [The Munsters] for 20 years." Zombie is primarily known for making R-rated horror films, such as The Devil's Rejects, 31, his 2007 Halloween reboot and its 2009 sequel, Halloween II. The Munsters, however, will be his first PG-rated film, featuring "macabre and suggestive material, scary images and language," which are all prevalent in Zombie's filmography but will likely be toned down for the upcoming family film.

The Munsters was created by Allan Burns and Chris Hayward and ran on CBS for two seasons and 70 episodes from 1964 to 1966. It starred Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster, Yvonne De Carlo as Lily Munster, Al Lewis as Grandpa, Butch Patrick as Eddie Munster and Beverley Owen and Pat Priest as Marilyn Munster. Following the series' cancellation, the titular family appeared in several spinoff films from 1966 to 1996. A sequel series titled The Munsters Today aired on syndication for 73 episodes across three seasons from 1988 to 1991.

Since the 2000s, there have been multiple attempts at rebooting The Munsters. In the mid-2000s, the Wayans Brothers were attached to a movie reboot, which never materialized. Mockingbird Lane, a television pilot set to reimagine the series in a darker tone, aired as a Halloween special on NBC in 2012. Another television reboot entered development in 2017 from Seth Meyers and Odd Mom Out creator Jill Kargman but eventually stalled out.

In addition to Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, the cast for The Munsters includes Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman, Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa, Richard Brake as Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang, Sylvester McCoy as Igor, Catherine Schell as Zoya Krupp and Jorge Garcia as Floop. Eddie and Marilyn Munster will also appear in the film, though casting announcements have not been released for the two characters at this time.

The Munsters will be simultaneously released in theaters by Universal Pictures and on its streaming service Peacock. The film does not currently have a release date.
