Walt Simonson Draws Jane Foster's Mighty Thor for the First Time

Legendary artist Walter Simonson will help usher the Mighty Thor to Valhalla when he illustrates a variant cover for the upcoming The Mighty Thor #706. The issue will mark the end of the line for Jane Foster, who has been acting as the de facto Thor for the last four years. The variant cover will be the first time Simonson has illustrated Foster as Thor for a comic.

Simonson has a long and storied history with Thor. In 1983, he took over writing and artist duties on the series, creating some of the most memorable characters and arcs in Thor history. Simonson was responsible for introducing both Frog Thor and fan-favorite Beta Ray Bill, the Korbinite capable of wielding Mjolnir.

“We’re honored to have legendary Thor writer and artist Walter Simonson provide this variant cover for the finale of ‘The Death Of The Mighty Thor,’” Series Editor Wil Moss said in a press release. “This is actually his first time drawing Jane Thor and the Mangog, a classic Thor villain from the Jack Kirby and Stan Lee era that he never [got] the chance to draw before.”

Releasing on April 18, The Mighty Thor #706 is written by Jason Aaron, with art by Russell Dauterman and Matt Wilson. The variant cover is illustrated by Simonson with coloring by Laura Martin.
