The Maxx, the 1990s dimension-spanning hero from Image Comics that anchored an animated series on MTV, is returning to print after a fashion -- although not with new stories.

Creator Sam Kieth launched a Kickstarter campaign for a 12-month 2021 calendar featuring the purple hero, as reported by THR. Published by Clover Press, the wire-bound 11" x 17" calendar features all-new art by Kieth.

Kieth said, "The Maxx 2021 Calendar was a Clover Press idea, particularly [founder] Robbie Robbins’s idea. It uses my cover art from the Image and IDW runs of the comic, with two new Maxx pieces of art for the calendar covers. For those who still are Maxx fans, or people that like large purple monsters with a claw as a middle finger… this calendar is for you," Kieth said.

The Kickstarter campaign also offers The Maxx postcards and variant issues of Juggernaut #1 from Marvel, autographed by Kieth.

The Maxx is a large purple creature in a dimension called the Outback; his alter ego on Earth is a homeless man. Julie Winters, the homeless man's social worker, has another identity in the Outback as the Jungle Queen. The Maxx protects and cares for the Jungle Queen in the Outback, as Julie protects and cares for him on Earth.

Image Comics published The Maxx from 1993 to 1998. From 2013 to 2016, IDW published The Maxx: Maxximizedwhich re-colored the first run's stories from new scans. MTV adapted much of the Image Comics run as segments of the anthology show Oddities in 1995.
