A new trailer for The Matrix Resurrections has been released to commemorate the announcement of when tickets go on sale for the long-awaited sequel. The trailer centers on the theme of déjà vu, which -- in the film universe -- represents a glitch in the Matrix. This is depicted with shots from the original three movies intercut with nearly identical scenes from Resurrections. The film's official Twitter account also confirmed tickets go on sale Dec. 6.RELATED: The Matrix Gets Even More Meta In New Resurrections Teasers

Also returning is Lana Wachowski, who co-directed the first three films with her sister Lilly. However, franchise newcomer Jessica Henwick recently disclosed that Lana nearly abandoned the project. "When we were shut down for COVID and we went off three months, I think it was, I still was at home training every day, even though we didn't know if we were going back," she said. "When we got shut down for COVID, Lana said, 'Well, maybe that's it. Maybe we won't come back and film the rest of it. Maybe the new Matrix will go down as this legendary film which [is] incomplete, and no one will ever be able to see it. Maybe that's what this is meant to be.' And we were all going, 'No, you have to finish the film.' But she really did toy with the idea of just calling it quits. I don't know if I'm meant to be talking about that."

Despite Lana's apprehension, others were eager to return. "We had filmmakers who you wanted to say yes to," Reeves explained. "[We had] material that you wanted to commit to, to give everything that you could to."

As for what fans can expect from the fourth Matrix film, co-writer David Mitchell recently described it as "certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains [whatever] the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It's a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieves a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters."

The Matrix Resurrections arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Dec. 22.
