Warner Bros. recently dropped the exciting final trailer for The Matrix Resurrections.
The trailer sees Neo and Trinity once again, this time continuing their apparently lost romance, established at the end of The Matrix. The clip also teases all-out war and yet another important decision placed in Neo's path, one far more crucial than choosing between the blue pill and the red.
Lana Wachowski wrote and directed The Matrix with her sister Lilly, who is not involved in the upcoming film. The Matrix premiered in 1999 and had a lasting impact on the sci-fi and action genre. The iconic film spawned two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, which were both released in 2003 and seemingly concluded Neo's story. Previous trailers for The Matrix Resurrections hint that the new film, set 20 years after Revolutions, will see Neo returned to his life as Thomas A. Anderson, until a younger Morpheus pulls him back in.
Actors Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have returned for The Matrix Resurrections, reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. While Morpheus does appear in the film, this time around he is played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II instead of Laurence Fishburne. Additionally, Hugo Weaving, who played Agent Smith, will not return for the sequel, though there are Agent Smiths in the trailer. Joining the new cast in the upcoming sequel are Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff and Neil Patrick Harris.
Weaving was originally involved in the production, but Lana Wachowski decided not to include Weaving, owing to scheduling issues. The actor explained, "She basically didn't feel that my commitment to the National Theatre was going to fit in with the dates that she had in mind for me." With regard to Fishburne's absence, details are scarce. The actor previously stated that he simple wasn't invited to return as Morpheus.
The Matrix Resurrections' final trailer also showcases some of the film's distinct tone. Reeves spoke in the past about some of the qualities audiences can expect and how they surprised him. "It's throwing down the Matrix gauntlet again; it's super smart, clever, entertaining, suspenseful, and funny," though he noted that it was Resurrections' humor that initially struck him.
A new film may not be the only major release Matrix fans can expect. It was recently reported that a tie-in game may be on its way, titled The Matrix Awakens. While not officially announced, a poster image surfaced, revealing both the title and the fact that the game will run on the Unreal Engine 5, likely making it a PlayStation 5 exclusive experience. No further details about the potential game are currently available.
The Matrix Resurrections premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on Dec. 22.
