Lilly Wachowski has confirmed the transgender allegory that exists within 1999's The Matrix, which she co-directed with her sister Lana.

Speaking with Netflix Film Club, she explained how she's "glad that it has gotten out that, y'know, that was the original intention, but the world wasn't quite ready yet -- the corporate world wasn't ready for it."

"When you make movies and you -- it's this public art form," she continued. "I think with any kind of art that you put out into the universe, there's a letting go process because it's entering into public dialogue. I like that. I like that there's an evolution process that we, as human beings, engage in art in a non-linear way. Now we can always talk about something in new ways and new light."

Wachowski added how The Matrix was "all about the desire for transformation, but it was all coming from a closeted point of view," as she then highlighted the character of Switch, who was originally intended to be male in the real world and a female in the Matrix. "I don't know how present my transness was in the background of my brain as we were writing it, but it all came from the same sort of fire," she said. "[...] Because trans people exist in this -- especially for me and Lana, y'know, we were existing in this space where the words didn't exist, so we were always living in a world of imagination. That's why I gravitated towards science fiction and fantasy and played Dungeons & Dragons. It was all about creating worlds. [...] It freed us up as filmmakers because we were able to imagine stuff at that time that you didn't necessarily see onscreen."

Both Lilly and Lana Wachowski transitioned after The Matrix Revolutions, released in 2003. Production on the latest entry in The Matrix franchise, meanwhile, was underway earlier this year but was forced to suspend activity due to the coronavirus pandemic. Its original release date has been subsequently pushed back to 2022. Additionally, although several of the trilogy's main cast, including Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss, are returning to the series, it's worth noting that only Lana Wachowski will be returning to direct.

Directed by Lana Wachowski, The Matrix 4 stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick and Jonathan Groff. The film arrives in theaters April 1, 2022.
