Over the past few years, Marvel has returned to the video game universe with games like Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Avengers. While not every project has stuck its landing, each title has represented its heroes in interesting ways, pushing their skills to the limits and showing what superhero games can offer. But no matter how far Marvel games ventured, they have yet to tackle the final frontier. With the next Captain Marvel-led film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe announced to be titled The Marvels, this would be the perfect opportunity to bring the cosmic side of the comics to the gaming world.

The groundwork for such a game has already been laid by Marvel's Avengers, which introduced many fans to Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. Whether it exists in that game's universe or not, more fans are now familiar with Kamala than they were before, and she provides a perfect starting point for a The Marvels game. It could, again, start with her meeting one of her idols -- Captain Marvel. Kamala and Carol Danvers could travel to space in this story, perhaps exploring worlds from the comics on an epic cosmic road-trip of sorts.

Of course, the most compelling aspect of such a game would be getting to play as these heroes, and these two Marvels would have unique power sets. Like in Marvel's Avengers, Kamala could play with more traditional beat 'em up controls. In contrast, Carol would likely have a mixture of long-range energy blasts and chest-crushing punches and kicks that get stronger as she absorbs more energy. Like in the upcoming film, the duo should be joined by Monica Rambeau and her light-based powers. These could allow her to teleport through various light sources and spectrums found in space and on different planets.

As the heroes travel through space, players could upgrade their skills. The opportunity to free-roam between planets would also be great, allowing players to explore the cosmos further and prepare each hero to face off against stronger threats found within each location. Overcoming obstacles could lead players towards stronger adversaries like Thanos, Ronan and the Super-Skrull.

Even with all of the threats and obstacles, the core of the game should be its character interactions. Like in Marvel's Avengers, Kamala could function as the game's heart and soul, allowing Carol and Monica to play sisterly roles to the teenage hero similar to how Bruce Banner functioned as a paternal figure for her. Each hero's unique personality should be just as important as their powers, showing players that there are people underneath the costumes, titles and talents -- and even an incredible hero like Captain Marvel can make a mistake.

Whether it would be tied to the MCU film or Marvel's Avengers, a game based on The Marvels featuring Carol, Kamala and Carol should absolutely be made a reality. Perhaps it could even incorporate original Captain Marvel Mar-Vell as a final playable character unlocked by completing the game. Regardless of what form this takes, these characters -- and Marvel's cosmic universe more broadly -- are a perfect fit for a video game.
