The first teaser trailer and synopsis for The Marvels reveals Nick Fury's new space-based organization, S.A.B.E.R.

The very first shot in the trailer shows former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in an enormous space station introduced as the "S.A.B.E.R. Space Station." Fury can be seen working alongside the superpowered Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who's referred to as a S.A.B.E.R. agent in the film's official synopsis: "When [Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel's] duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau."

This isn't the first time Fury's space station has appeared onscreen. The same space station was shown in a post-credits scene during Spider-Man: Far From Home, where the real Fury was issuing orders to Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and several other shape-shifting Skrull aliens. However, this is the first time Fury's new operation has been named. S.A.B.E.R. is unique to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and does not appear in Marvel Comics, unlike other agencies such as S.H.I.E.L.D. and S.W.O.R.D., which have direct comics counterparts.

SHIELD and SWORD Have Some Competition

The international counter-terrorist organization S.H.I.E.L.D. was introduced to the MCU all the way back in Iron Man. Under the leadership of Director Fury, the group put together the Avengers Initiative, although it was destabilized after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. More recently, the MCU also introduced the American agency S.W.O.R.D., which was founded by Monica's aunt, Maria Rambeau. S.W.O.R.D. appeared prominently in WandaVision, where it dealt with the "Westview Anomaly" caused by Scarlet Witch's magic. In the comics, S.W.O.R.D. deals with alien and interdimensional threats while S.H.I.E.L.D. deals with threats on Earth.

The Marvels will unite Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau. A sequel to both the 2019 movie Captain Marvel and the 2022 Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, the new film "entangles" the three superheroes after a wormhole incident causes them to begin switching places with each other. The warmongering Kree Empire also returns once again, as the mostly blue-skinned aliens served as villains in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel. The trailer features a new Kree played by Zawe Ashton, who wields a similar hammer to the Kree warlord Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) from Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel.

Before The Marvels comes out, Fury will be the main character of the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, which premieres in June. The show will follow Fury as he uncovers a conspiracy by a group of Skrulls to replace several of Earth's world leaders, and will introduce Olivia Colman as an MI6 agent and Emilia Clarke as Talos' daughter, G'iah.

The Marvels comes to theaters on Nov. 10.
