Marvel Comics writer Eve Ewing has seemingly revealed that Monica Rambeau will be known as Photon in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, The Marvels. In an interview with the YouTube channel Black Comic Lords, Ewing -- who currently writes the comic book series Monica Rambeau: Photon -- was asked why Photon was chosen as Monica's superhero alias when the MCU seems to be leaning towards calling her Spectrum. "You just said in the MCU she might be going as Spectrum and I have nothing else to say about that," Ewing initially teased before explaining that "the publishing side and the MCU side do not communicate frequently, but we do sometimes." She added, "Let me put it this way. I’ll tell you this. I did not choose for her to be called Photon in this comic." Based on her response, Ewing has strongly suggested that the MCU's Monica Rambeau will be known as Photon and that is why she was instructed by Marvel to use Photon over Spectrum as Monica's alias.RELATED: Park Seo Joon May Join the MCU as Captain Marvel's Alien Husband

The Marvels will serve as Monica Rambeau's third appearance in the MCU, following the 2019 film Captain Marvel (where she appeared as a child played by Akira Akbar) and the 2021 Disney+ limited series WandaVision (portrayed by Teyonah Parris). The upcoming MCU film will take place after the post-credits scene of Ms. Marvel's Season 1 finale, which depicts Kamala Khan suddenly swapping places with Carol Danvers after her magic bangle activates. Marvel Studios has since confirmed that The Marvels will focus on Kamala, Carol and Monica having to team up to figure out why they swap places every time one of them uses their powers.

Nick Fury Returns for The Marvels

Since the premiere of the first Avengers film in 2012, fans have grown accustomed to seeing their favorite superheroes regularly crossover with one another every two or three years. Yet Phase 4 was light on the crossovers, with only WandaVision and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law including characters from multiple MCU sub-franchises. Luckily for fans, Phase 5 is already shaping up to be crossover heavy, with The Marvels assembling Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel and Parris' Monica Rambeau -- as well as Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury -- to stop Zawe Ashton's currently unknown villain.

Jackson will also be back as the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director in the Disney+ limited series Secret Invasion. The upcoming crossover series will see Fury working with Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) and War Machine (Don Cheadle) to stop a faction of Skrulls that have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth. The final major crossover event of Phase 5 will be the blockbuster film Thunderbolts. Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Valentina Allegra de Fontaine will be responsible for assembling the team, which will consist of David Harbour's Red Guardian, Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova/Black Widow, Wyatt Russell's John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko's Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen's Ava Starr/Ghost and Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier.

Directed by Nia DeCosta, The Marvels will open in theaters on July 28, 2023, as part of Phase 5 of the MCU.
