"The Martian" grossed and estimated $55 million in its first weekend at the North American box office, enough to give Ridley Scott's sci-fi adventure the second-best October opening of all time, behind 2013's "Gravity."

The Fox film, which stars Matt Damon as an astronaut presumed dead and left behind on Mars, brought in an additional $45.2 million oversees, lifting its worldwide total to just over $100 million. According to Deadline, "The Martian" opened at No. 1 in 20 markets.

"Hotel Transylvania 2" slipped to No. 2 in its second week with $33 million, followed by Denis Villeneuve’s crime thriller "Sicario," which leaped from 10th to third place with $12 million in its first weekend of wide release. The comedy "The Intern" was fourth, adding another $11.6 million to the till, with "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" rounding out the Top Five with $7.6 million.
