As the first ever live-action Star Wars television series, Disney+'s The Mandalorian has a star-studded cast including the surprise inclusion of prolific filmmaker Werner Herzog.

Perhaps best known for his decades of unflinching documentary work in addition to directing feature films, Herzog was announced as part of the upcoming series' cast in an undisclosed role. While promoting his latest documentary, Meeting Gorbachev, the filmmaker revealed his part in the series would not be a particularly big one but that he would appear as an antagonist of some sort.

"Now this is not a secret anymore, [I have] a small part, real small part, in The Mandalorian, the Star Wars sequel or whatever you call it," confirmed Herzog in an interview with IndieWire. "I like to do it because I know I’m good on screen, but only if I have to play a real villain."

Herzog has acted as villains prior to his Star Wars casting, appearing as a villain in the first Jack Reacher film opposite Tom Cruise.
