WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of Star Wars: The Mandalorian, "Chapter 9: The Marshal," streaming now on Disney+.

The Mandalorian Season 2 kicked off with an epic battle against a krayt dragon. When their initial plan to wound the dragon's belly didn't work, Din Djarin allowed himself to be swallowed by it along while holding onto an explosive-laden Bantha in order to blow up the beast from the inside. This was a remarkable feat, especially since the same titular bounty hunter was almost killed by a few creatures in Season 1.

It would be an understatement to say that Mando's previous encounters with ferocious weren't as triumphant as his victory against the krayt dragon. In the first episode of the show, Din's ship was attacked by a ravinak, a giant tusked animal that lived underneath the ice on Maldo Kreis. He managed to get out of its clutches by shooting the animal with his rifle. but the incident left his Mythrol bounty shaken. Later that same episode, Din was caught off guard by a rogue blurrg, a large reptilian creature, and had to be saved by Kuiil. While he did learn to ride the creature soon after, it was still surprising to see the bounty hunter be pinned down so quickly. Finally, Din's face-off with the mudhorn, a furry rhino-like animal, would have certainly turned deadly had the Child not interfered using the Force. To put it simply, Mando might be a great warrior, but he was barely a match for most large animals.

Although he didn't encounter many more giant creatures until Season 2, Din did gain some very important skills and other advantages that helped him defeat the krayt dragon. It should be noted that all of the previously mentioned fights occurred before Din received his full suit of beskar armor. It might not have made a huge difference in every situation, but the armor did protect him against the krayt dragon's acidic spit. Additionally, Din had a jetpack that allowed him to get close enough to shoot the creature and to make a quick getaway, not to mention all the explosives provided by the townspeople.

Another important factor to consider is that Din had the time and the knowledge to come up with a strategy for fighting the krayt dragon. While Din is familiar with other cultures, his knowledge of animals doesn't appear to be that extensive. In the case of the blurgg, he was caught off guard and couldn't react quickly enough to avoid its attack. Furthermore, he only managed to ride the blurrg with Kuiil's help. Out of the three previous incidents, he seemed to have the most time leading up to the mudhorn, but it's unclear how much he knew about the creature beforehand. Even though he had to improvise a little with the krayt dragon, he had significantly more time to prepare for it and was able to learn more about the animal from the Tusken Raiders.

Lastly, unlike the other creatures, Din had help fighting the krayt dragon from the beginning. He started off as a lone wolf who rarely asked anyone for assistance, so when he fought against the other creatures, he did so alone. Over the course of Season 1, however, he gained a few trusted friends and learned how to work as a team. He put these new skills to use when he brought together the townspeople of Mos Pelgo and the Tusken Raiders to take down the krayt dragon together. Had he faced it alone, the bounty hunter wouldn't have stood a chance against the creature. In the end, while Din's ability to wrangle huge animals hasn't changed much, perhaps his resources and teamwork skills have made him better equipped to handle formidable foes.
