Life-long Star Wars fan and action star Katee Sackhoff revealed how she obtained her live-action role of Bo-Katan Kryze in Season 2 of The Mandalorian through well-timed jokes.

"When I was a little kid, I idolized male action stars because there were not a lot of female ones in the 80s," the actor shared on the Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum podcast. "We had the Sigourney Weaver's, the Linda Hamilton's and the Lucy Lawless', but we also had Princess Leia who was smart and feisty and gorgeous and a ball-buster and capable and caring and so well rounded." She added, "So from a young age, I loved Star Wars."

Sackhoff added that she joked often with her agent that she would play any part in the Star Wars universe -- no matter how small. "If they call me to be a rock in a Star Wars movie, I'll be a rock, just to be in this world," the actor said.

When she was offered to voice Bo-Katan in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Sackhoff accepted the role with zero hesitation. "A female Mandalorian warrior? Um, hello!" she said. "I remember, multiple times as we were sort of doing this, [Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni] and I joking, 'Yanno, one day if this happens, she could exist in these worlds...'''

"I always joked with [Dave] because I never thought it would happen," she told Rosenbaum. "Of course, they would recast it! They'd hire Scarlett Johansson or something like that." Sackhoff added, "But when Mandalorian came out and I saw him at Celebration, I made a joke about yanno Bo-Katan, wink wink, nudge, nudge, 'I've been playing characters like this for 15 years, buddy!'"

However, things didn't get real for Sackhoff until she met The Mandalorian's creator Jon Favreau. "It took me halfway through the meeting to realize he was actually talking about me doing Bo-Katan," she said. "I remember sitting across from him, total out of body experience, and thinking to myself, 'Is he? Oh, these are pictures of me on the wall! Oh, what is going on?'" He offered her the role in the room without asking Sackhoff to audition for the part.

Before portraying Bo-Katan in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Sackhoff voiced the character in both the Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. But even after appearing in The Mandalorian, she's still pinching herself. "My mind is blown that not only did they have the thought to do this," she concluded. "But they believed in me and let me."

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito. Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney+.
