The first season of The Mandalorian ended with the reveal that Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) is in possession of the Darksaber, a legendary black-bladed lightsaber. While it only made a brief appearance in Season 1 of the Disney+ series, Esposito promised that Season 2 will explore its history and explain how his character got his hands on it.

"You'll see more of the Darksaber, you'll get the explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world," Esposito told Deadline on the heels of receiving an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. "Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It's a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later."

"(The saber) is a key to Moff Gideon's past, which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together," added Esposito.

The history of the Darksaber begins with its creator, the Mandalorian/ Jedi known as Tarre Vizsla. Following Tarre's death, the saber was stolen by Mandalorians. Years later, during Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Darksaber fell into the hands of Darth Maul after he won it in a duel with Pre Vizsla. In Star Wars Rebels, the sword found its way to Sabine Wren, another Mandalorian, and Kanan Jarrus. Wren gave it to fellow Mandalorian, Bo-Katan Kryze, who was the last person to have it before it was seen in the hands of Gideon.

The Darksaber is not the only piece of Star Wars lore that will be tackled in Season 2 of the series. Several characters from past TV shows and movies are scheduled to make an appearance when The Mandalorian returns for Season 2, including Bo-KatanBoba FettAhsoka Tano and Captain Rex.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito and Emily Swallow. Season 1 is available now on Disney+, with Season 2 arriving in October.
