Directed by Schumacher from a screenplay by Janice Fischer, James Jeremias and Jeffrey Boam (based on a story by Fischer and Jeremias), The Lost Boys originally released in theaters on July 31, 1987. In addition to Sutherland, Patric, Haim and Feldman, the film starred the likes of Jami Gertz, Edward Herrmann, Barnard Hughes, Dianne Wiest, Jamison Newlander and Alex Winter. The Lost Boys has been credited with injecting youthful energy into the vampire genre, thus inspiring projects like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and What We Do in the Shadows.

"When their parents divorce, Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam Emerson (Corey Haim) move with their mother to their grandfather's house in a California town nicknamed, 'The Murder Capital of the World,'" Warner Bros.' official synopsis for the film reads. "Soon after arriving, Michael gets involved with a hell-raising motorcycle gang of vampires with a charismatic leader (Kiefer Sutherland). When Sam becomes involved with the Frog Brothers (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander), who confess to being undercover Vampire hunters, he realizes it's up to them to save Michael and the rest of the town from the vampire gang."

What Does the Future Hold for The Lost Boys?

Following the initial release of The Lost Boys in 1987, two sequels, Lost Boys: The Tribe and Lost Boys: The Thirst, released in 2008 and 2010, respectively. For a time, a television reboot was in the works at The CW, though the project ultimately failed to materialize, with updates ceasing around early-to-mid 2020. In September 2021, it was reported that Warner Bros. was instead developing a big-screen re-imagining of The Lost Boys, with Randy McKinnon attached to write, Jonathan Entwistle attached to direct and Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) and Jaeden Martell (It) attached to star. Since then, however, there have been no updates on the planned reboot film.
