Disney's live action remake of The Lion King is no hit with critics.

Movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes has unveiled director Jon Favreau's film's score, and it's not what the studio had hoped for. At the time of this writing, The Lion King stands 'Rotten' with a disappointing score of 59% out of 111 reviews.

The website's Critics Consensus reads, "While it can take pride in its visual achievements, The Lion King is a by-the-numbers retelling that lacks the energy and heart that made the original so beloved--though for some fans that may just be enough."

The Lion King's red carpet premiere was held in Los Angeles on July 9. After the screening, early social media reactions praised the Disney film for its technical achievements and talented voice cast. Considering that, the Rotten Tomatoes score may come as a surprise to some fans, though those who were watching the reviews as they rolled out over the past several days probably expected things wouldn't be too rosy for the remake.
