‘The LEGO Movie’ Sequel To Bring In More Strong Female Characters

When The LEGO Movie was released in February, audiences immediately fell in love with the stop-motion animated picture. There was just one major aspect that bothered LEGO Movie sequel director Chris McKay: the amount of female heroes in the fold. While the core cast of the film included Elizabeth Banks (Wyldstyle) and Alison Brie (Unikitty), the bulk of the main characters were male. In a recent interview with MailOnline, the director expressed his intent to include more strong female characters in the upcoming sequel.

“We have a lot of producers that were female who had concerns and we were always constantly saying to ourselves: ‘Are we just a bunch of white guys sitting here making this movie from our own myopic point of view?'” McKay said. “We were constantly responding to that question and that helped us make Wyldstyle a better character and Unikitty a more interesting character. I think it’s forcing us to look at how we make a sequel and turn that into something that’s more powerful and special.”

McKay also notes that The LEGO Movie more than likely wouldn’t pass the Bechdel test, a major topic in terms of gender equality in fiction. When The LEGO Movie sequel releases in 2017, it’s likely we’ll see a lot more female Lego characters at the front lines alongside Wyldstyle and Unikitty.

The LEGO Movie sequel is set for release May 26, 2017.
