One of the most gripping aspects of Avatar: The Last Airbender by far has to be its colorful cast of characters, and thankfully this extends to its sequel, The Legend Of Korraas well. From two brothers who went from surviving on street scraps to help save the universe to an Avatar who masters the elements fairly early on but still struggles with herself, character conflict and growth are around every corner of the series.

One of the characters who grows the most throughout the series is Asami, though sadly much of her development happens early, making her slightly less prevalent near the end of the series. Although she can come off as a pampered girl who's far too used to luxury, that couldn't be farther from the truth, and her wealthy facade hides a burning spirit of rebellion within.

10 Sees Things Through

The Legend Of Korra, Season Four, After All These Years, Asami Sato

Asami is an incredibly dedicated girl who has an incredibly good-natured and strong-willed heart. This is shown most clearly in how she chooses to handle her father's business after his imprisonment, as it would have been completely reasonable for Asami to decide to allow Future Industries to crumble as she joined up with Team Avatar.

However, Asami takes the company under her own reigns, working to restore its tainted reputation. It also shows that she has a resilient spirit that doesn't give in easily, as most would've seen it as a task not worth trying to do.

9 Self-Defense Master

Asami is shown being incredibly competent when it comes to self-defense on screen many times, despite the fact that she doesn't possess any ability to bend. As her backstory beyond her father isn't explored too much in the series, it'd be safe for one to assume she simply learned to keep up in a bender-dominated world, but the real reason is much darker.

When she was only six, her mother was murdered, and Asami's father had her learn self-defense immediately so that she could protect herself from the same fate. The incident is also what sparked her father's insatiable hatred against benders.

8 Generous Nature

Asami Sato in The Legend of Korra

Due to Asami's upbringing, it would be completely understandable for her to be jaded like her father, or at the very least someone who's business-driven and cares mostly about profit. Despite this, though, she possesses one of the most giving natures out of the new Team Avatar.

She not only invites Mako out to dinner to apologize for hitting him, when he did zip out from behind a parked truck, making him nearly impossible to see, but she convinces her father to sponsor his pro-bending team after learning of their financial situation. She also offers Mako and Bolin a place to stay when the pro-bending arena is attacked.

7 Piloting Savvy

Asami is shown to be a rather competent driver throughout the series, so much so that she becomes the designated driver of the new Team Avatar. However, it can be easy to forget that cars aren't the only machines that Asami knows her way around. Thanks to her father's line of work and her skills in engineering and robotics, Asami is able to pilot and make use of many of her father's inventions.

She even used one of his mecha tanks to take him on in battle and best him, showing that she has an even better grasp of the technology than its very creator.

6 Emotional Support

Going hand-in-hand with Asami's giving nature is her tendency to act as the emotional support of sorts for the rest of the group, and this especially applies to Korra as the two begin to deepen their friendship. Especially when it comes to matters that concern Korra's Avatar duties, she has a tendency to bottle things up from those close to her such as Bolin and Mako.

However, it's a different story when it comes to Asami, who's shown offering Korra sympathetic guidance on more than one occasion. It's heartwarming to see her grow from a love rival of Korra's to her closest and most trusted companion, and eventually, romantic partner.

5 Sharp Eye

Due to Asami's high emotional intelligence and social skills, she's able to pick up on tiny little cues that would go unnoticed by most. With a group whose emotional stability can waver at times, it's absolutely essential that they had someone like Asami around who's good at both reading and handling people.

This skill of hers is also actually shown off quite a few times before she ever becomes a part of Team Avatar. She's able to clearly see the awkward ways in which Korra and Mako interact after she began dating the latter when others like Bolin remained completely oblivious.

4 Familial Conflict

It didn't take any convincing after Asami learned of her father's heinous deeds to fight against him, lending her support in his capture and jailing. One might assume that the only thing that she harbored for her father was disdain and hatred, and for a while, Asami believed that as well. However, she suffers an internal conflict whenever she goes to see him that can be easy to miss. Although she originally goes there to tell him to stop contacting her, her emotions were that of pity and heartbreak towards how her father tainted their relationship.

She even stuck around to play a game of Pai Sho with him, despite not knowing if she could forgive him, showing at least some desire to try to mend things.

3 When Her Feelings Formed

Korra and Asami in the finale of The Legend Of Korra

Many fans felt as if the romantic relationship between Asami and Korra was rushed without much convincing buildup, as the two spent three years apart. However, it's actually within those three years that Asami realized her true feelings for the Avatar and her closest friend in more recent years.

In the comics that continue the series, the two share some of their more personal feelings. Asami tells Korra that the three years in which she was absent were the longest years of her life, and through both the painful distance and the letters they sent to each other was she able to realize that she was in love.

2 Past Parallels

Asami tearing up while visiting her father, The Legend Of Korra

Asami's history actually has a surprising amount of parallels to that of Zuko from the original series. Both of their fathers were antagonists of the Avatar, and their actions led them to lose their social status. Both of them strongly opposed their father's wicked ideals in the end and ended up fighting them whenever their father tried to kill them.

Finally, both of them took it upon themselves to repair the damage dealt by their fathers after they were imprisoned, with Asami restoring Future Industries' reputation and Zuko restoring the honor of the Fire Nation without ruthless violence.

1 Antagonist Concept

Asami staring and standing her ground, The Legend Of Korra

While Asami's story of putting a stop to her father's evil ways and becoming an ally of the new Team Avatar works incredibly well for her, that surprisingly wasn't always the plan for her character. Instead, she was originally designed to be a villain alongside her father. She was originally going to be an Equalist spy who used her relationship with Mako to get close to the Avatar.

While that sounds like it had the potential to be incredibly interesting, anything but the heroic woman Asami grows into just doesn't seem right.
