Damon Lindelof returns to television in a few weeks with The Leftovers, his new HBO series about what happens to the world when 2 percent of the population mysteriously vanishes without a trace — an event that may or may not be linked to the biblical Rapture.

"I wish I could translate the hints about the departed young men and women. And the hints about old men, and mothers, and the offspring taken soon after their lapse," a calm voice narrates in the new teaser for The Leftovers. "What do you think has become of the young and old men? What do you think has become of the women and children?"

"They are alive and well somewhere; the smallest sprouts show that there really is no death," the voice continues. "All goes onward and outward and nothing collapses. And to depart is different from what anybody supposed — and luckier."

There's a sense of calm through the first four fifths of the trailer, until the final ten seconds devolve with chaotic, violent imagery — a dichotomy that could very well be on display throughout the series' first ten-episode season.

The Leftovers premieres on June 15.
