At the end of The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1, Episode 2, "The Day After," the mysterious US Marshall Grady Bradford knocks on Hannah's front door, but Hannah and Bailey aren't home. They aren't at work or school either, instead, they're on an airplane flying to Austin, Texas. They have decided to take an active role in the mystery of Owen's disappearance. He left in such strange circumstances, and suspicious people have been popping up in his wake. Hannah and Bailey are no longer going to be reactionary in this situation, and are taking a proactive approach.

Since Owen's disappearance, Hannah has spent most of her time trying to honor his wish of protecting Bailey and reflecting on their marriage. She remembered a moment when she invited him to attend a woodworking convention in Austin, Texas. He had a strange reaction to the invitation and vaguely explained that he had some personal, complicated history with the city. When Hannah pressed for more details, Owen sidestepped the question and never really did get into the details. Then Hannah asked Bailey about the city and Bailey had a small recollection of time spent at a football stadium there. Though Bailey wasn't able to give many details, it was enough to convince Hannah that it was the place to go for answers.

What Hannah and Bailey Hope To Find in Austin

Hannah protects Bailey on The Last Thing He Told Me.

Hannah and Bailey's primary goal in Austin is to find clarity and the truth about Owen's disappearance. Ideally, they'd like to find Owen, but based on what Hannah has deduced about Owen's past, it's unlikely that they really expect him to be there. So their first stop is to start in Austin with the hope that the city holds the secret to Owen's past. Hannah and Bailey each have their own relationship with Owen, and therefore their own respective understanding of who he is as a person. However, Owen is his own person with an identity all his own. That's the Owen they pursue.

One of the central themes of the series is whether one can ever really know a person. Owen has a history that neither Hannah nor Bailey has any idea about. Despite that, they both love him for who he is to them personally. He's a devoted father and a supportive husband. Before the ordeal at his company and subsequent vanishing, that is ultimately all that matters. It's also exactly what's at risk as they continue their investigation. They don't know what information they're going to find about Owen on their journey, but the very fact they are on this journey indicates that their relationships with Owen are different now. Hannah and Bailey are on their way to Austin, Texas, to find out the truth about Owen and reunite with the person they love.
