Jennifer Garner returns to her television roots in Apple TV's upcoming limited series, The Last Thing He Told Me. The series starts streaming on April 14 and features a cast of familiar faces as it unravels the mystery of a family. The series is set to cover a variety of themes, from motherhood and marriage to the burden of the past. The mystery thriller will follow the main character Hannah as she sets out to unravel a mystery left to her by her husband, the man she's only been married to for 14 months after he leaves her and his daughter nothing but a note before he disappears.

A trailer has been released, but very few details regarding the plot or episodes have been disclosed beyond this. Below is that trailer, as well as a guide to the basic information about the upcoming series.

Is The Last Thing He Told Me Based on a Novel?

The Last Thing He Told Me is based on a novel of the same name written by Laura Dave. The novel was voted the Goodreads Winner as the best mystery thriller of 2021. Dave has five other books, and she has actually written a few of the episodes for the television adaptation series alongside her husband, Josh Singer. Singer is an Academy Award-winning writer thanks to his work on Spotlight.

The pair also serve as executive producers for the series. Hello Sunshine, the production company, recently released the Daisy Jones & The Six miniseries with Prime Video, another novel adapted into a television show. While the author of that book, Taylor Jenkins Reid, was a producer on the series, she did not write any episodes. Dave is more involved with adapting her novel in the case of The Last Thing He Told Me.

What is the Plot of The Last Thing He Told Me?

The basic premise of The Last Thing He Told Me's novel is that a wife looks for her husband after he inexplicably goes missing. However, the story is far more complicated than that. The central character Hannah Michaels, played by Garner, receives a single, vague message from her husband, Owen, before his disappearance. He leaves instructions to "protect her," which Hannah interprets as protecting his daughter Bailey. It's a story about love, family, and the choices to protect loved ones. Owen disappears the same day his tech company makes headlines about criminal activity. Many believe his disappearance is connected to these crimes, but as Hannah learns more about Owen's past, she realizes there is something bigger and much more threatening.

Hannah is not Bailey's mother but her stepmother, and the two of them have an icy relationship; neither is entirely sure how to relate to the other, and their only connection is Owen. When he goes missing, they're forced to connect in a way they never thought possible as they attempt to unravel the secrets of Owen's life. As Hannah learns more about her husband's history, she questions how well she knew him, considering how much of his past was a fabrication. She interacts with people who arguably know more about her husband than she does. All of this information questions the validity of their marriage and love story. Hannah's relationship with Owen is further complicated by Bailey, who has never had a mother before and now doesn't know how to relate to a stepmother. Without Owen, Hannah and Bailey's relationship is tested in a new way that shocks them both when they realize they have forged a bond stronger than the forces working against them and Owen.

Who Stars in The Last Thing He Told Me?

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Owen on The Last Thing He Told Me

Originally Julia Roberts was cast as Hannah, but she stepped away from the project, which allowed the opportunity to go to Jennifer Garner. Garner leads the series, a position she should be used to, considering her big break came from the 2001 series Alias. Angourie Rice plays Bailey, and people may recognize her from her role as Betty Brant in the MCU Spider-Man films. Owen is played by Game of Thrones alumni Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. These three recognizable actors come together to play the story's central family and their surprisingly complicated yet loving family.

Aisha Tyler from Criminal Minds and Friends, Geoff Stults from Cowboy Beepbop, Augusto Aguilera from The Predator, and John Harlan Kim from 9-1-1 help to round out the central cast. Though with so little officially announced about the series, a larger cast will likely be revealed as the series progresses. The book features many supporting characters whose allegiances are constantly questioned as Hannah tries to figure out who is working to help Owen like she is and who has driven him into hiding. If the series is anything like the book, these supporting characters will be memorable, but the truth of their nature won't be revealed until Hannah herself sorts through the evidence.

Where to Watch The Last Thing He Told Me?

Hannah protects Bailey on The Last Thing He Told Me.

There is only one place to watch The Last Thing He Told Me, and that is through an Apple TV+ subscription. The service is the exclusive home for its original series. In October 2022, the service announced that there would be an increase in price for both monthly and yearly subscriptions. However, it's arguably worth that price increase as it is still a competitive expense in relation to other streaming services, and the content it produces is of high quality. The service became the first streamer to win the Best Picture Oscar with its film Coda, and Ted Lasso is a massive awards hit as well as an audience favorite. Given the pedigree of most streamers' content, there's reason to be optimistic about The Last Thing He Told Me.
