HBO's The Last of Us confirmed its latest episode featured a subtle Easter egg honoring one of game developer Naughty Dog's other major titles.
The Last of Us game developer posted an image to its official Twitter page, asking fans if they caught the Uncharted Easter egg in episode 2, "Infected," with Tess Servopolous's lighter in her final standoff against the Clickers. The lighter in question is a silver zippo lighter with the number 76 and a star emblazoned on the front, referencing the year the United States wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence. The Easter egg expands further than the lighter, as Troy Baker voiced Joel in The Last of Us game and Sam in Uncharted.
Tess used the lighter with some difficulty during the climax of episode 2. After finally arriving at the Capital Building, Tess, Joel and Ellie find the Fireflies dead and an onslaught of Infected on their way toward them. Tess reveals she received a fatal Clicker bite while escaping through the museum, leading her to sacrifice herself to give Joel and Ellie time to run. While the pair flee, Tess covers the place in fuel and explosives, then prepares to blow it up using the lighter. Tess receives a disturbing kiss from a Clicker in the process but ultimately manages to blow up the Capital Building, taking out several Infected with her.
HBO's The Last of Us Expands on the Games
HBO's The Last of Us adaptation largely follows the story from the games faithfully, though it makes a few significant changes like Tess' manner of death. It also expands on parts of the story that got left untold the first time around, such as how the Cordyceps Infection began. The show also massively expanded The Last of Us' prologue, adding more context to the day the infection broke out and the main characters' lives before and after.
Co-creator Neil Druckmann recently spoke about how the adaptation expands on parts of the story that didn't make it into the game. "There's stuff that was written that we didn't get a chance to put in the game that is in the show," he explained. "So, you'll get to see an enrichment of these characters...It's interesting, we've now talked to people who have watched the entire season and went back and played the game, and they said the game is now richer having watched the show."
New episodes of The Last of Us air every Sunday on HBO at 6 PM EST and stream on HBO Max.
