Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the co-creators behind the live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, are preparing a Season 3 for the prestigious HBO show.

In an interview with GQ magazine, Mazin and Druckmann were asked how Season 2 of The Last of Us will cover The Last of Us Part II, considering the massive scope of the PlayStation game. Druckmann, the creative director and writer of The Last of Us video games, confirmed that the next chapter will echo that scale. "It’s more than one season," said Druckmann. When asked if the adaptation of the sequel will be covered in two or three seasons, Mazin responded cryptically. "You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct."

Before confirming a Season 3 of The Last of Us, Mazin and Druckmann discussed the negative reception a portion of video game players had towards The Last of Us Part II and how it might influence the TV show. "How they react is how they react, that is completely outside of our control," Druckmann said. "So how do we make the best TV show version of that story? That's the problem that we wrestle with every day."

The Last of Us Is Anything But Dull

Mazin also chimed in, explaining that any kind of response, be it positive or negative, is better than boredom. "To the extent that the storylines move people to rage, confusion, or disappointment or anger. Well that, I suppose, is preferable to the worst possible outcome, which is indifference," said the showrunner. As an example, Mazin brought up the divisive reception towards Episode 3 of the show. Some viewers cited Episode 3 as the series' best, largely for its focus on the homosexual romance between Bill and Frank, while others wrote it off as filler for Joel and Ellie's lack of screentime.

"There's been a lot written about the third episode of this season, and it's an episode we're very proud of, and it moved a lot of people," Mazin said. "It's one of the lower-rated shows on IMDb for one reason – a lot of people came on and gave it a 1/10. Not 5/10. One. The median score on that episode is 10. And the mean is an 8 or something. And that's because there are incredibly strong opinions one way or the other. But I would much rather have a show that lives off of 10s and 1s, than a show that lives off of 5s."

The Last of Us follows a gruff smuggler named Joel who is tasked with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie across the devastated remains of the United States plagued with zombie-like creatures, reanimated by a parastic fungus. Season 1 of the show is now available to stream in its entirety on HBO Max.
