Netflix's The Last Kids on Earth left Jack and his friends as a cohesive unit on an Earth ravaged by zombies and monsters. However, they mended fences with the aliens after Rezzoch's disciple, Thrull, was found to be a traitor, using his own kind to open a portal to bring the cosmic tyrant over.

This led to Jack forming a new society in Wakefield, although Season 2 did end with a tease that Rezzoch -- or some other being -- still found a way to come through to the planet. With that in mind, let's look at how Season 3 is set to adapt Max Brallier's third book: The Last Kids on Earth and the Nightmare King.

Jack and his friends have finally gotten the hang of being heroes and the trailer for the third season shows them not only finding a way to playfully incorporate the zombies into their lives, but the refugee aliens as well. This time though, it looks like they'll have to become more of a military unit (something the last season teased when Thrull cut loose) as bigger monsters can be seen attacking the small town.

They're akin to giant Kaiju, with a multiple-eyed red dragon most prominent amongst the enemies, and given that it seems to be entrancing Jack, the squad will need to be united as ever. With Thrull gone, Jack won't have a mentor so he'll have to dig deep and find the leader within. He does have the Bestiary in hand so he can harness various monsters' powers. This makes him well-equipped for the task, especially if Rezzoch has more loyalists on Earth.

If Rezzoch comes through in her full form, it can be expected that the aliens will be devoured or enslaved by her. But that's not the only enemy that's looming as the Nightmare King may come into play. This entity's influence has already been felt, giving Jack ominous and apocalyptic visions of death and destruction, so it appears to have come through the portal too, or at least have found a way to exert influence on Jack.

The Nightmare King may well be what's possessing monsters like the dragon because the books had the entity trying to corrupt Jack into being its avatar. This may set up Rezzoch to either battle the Nightmare King or team up with it. To fight one of them, Jack might have to team up with the other as well, so we could witness uneasy alliances being formed. This has potential to divide the monsters such as Bardle and Skaelka who may not trust these enemies with their species' safety, leaving Jack in between a rock and a hard place.

The trailer also sees the new humans trying to make contact via radio. Unfortunately, Quint can't send word back, so they'll have to work on establishing a line of communication. Quint, Dirk and June will clearly be going on adventures to get the tech needed for this, but Jack just isn't liking the possibility of new people coming into the mix.

Book 3 found him disenchanted because he didn't want anyone altering this family dynamic in Wakefield, so his insecurities will pop up again. It's worth noting that Jack could be right in that the alien-hunting military may appear, or even evil pockets of humanity who are trying to trick them. Ultimately, all the others want to find their families, so Jack will have to set aside his own self-interest and figure out how to help his friends possibly reunite with their loved ones. This definitely looks like it'll be Jack's strongest test in the series, as his entire life has been based on coping with loss and he might not be able to stand losing June, whom he loves dearly.

The two seasons of The Last Kids on Earth are streaming on Netflix. It stars Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson, Catherine O’Hara, Keith David, Bruce Campbell, Garland Whitt, Montse Hernandez, Charles Demers and Nick Wolfhard. Season 3 premieres Oct. 16.
