DC Black Label just released the first look at its upcoming high-fantasy horror series, The Last God, by Philip Kennedy Johnson, Riccardo Federici, Sunny Gho and Kai Carpenter.

The Last God tells the story of two fellowships of heroes fighting the same threat 30 years apart. The eldest group defeated the last living god to save the realm of Caín Anuun from the end of the world (and an undead army), and became the rulers of the land. But in classic Beowulf fashion, they might not have been telling the entire truth, because 30 years later their kingdom is starting to crumble, and a second group of heroes will have to face a terrible evil once more.

“The opportunity to bring high fantasy to DC is a huge honor, and one I don’t take lightly,” Johnson said in a statement. “The Last God is my chance to bring new fans into the comics community, and maybe even introduce some hardcore comics fans to high fantasy.”

Mark Doyle, Executive Editor of DC, was quite enthusiastic about the possibilities that The Last God brings to DC's Black Label imprint. “The Last God is an exciting new chapter for DC. It’s an epic, original story set in a bloody high-fantasy world. I cannot wait for people to read this book.”

The released preview pages promise so much more than run-of-the-mill high fantasy, and Johnson went out of his way to tease that this series will dive shoulder-deep into the horror genre, with a terrifying insect-like monster that wouldn't be out of place in a Lovecraft story.

“The fantasy genre is an insane playground with no rules… you can ride a crazy idea as far as your imagination will take you, which makes it perfect for horror,” Johnson said. “But despite that, truly all-in horror/high fantasy mash-ups are rare, and I don’t think I’m the only one who wants one. In every fantasy series I ever read, the scary parts were always the most fun, and I always wanted to see more.”
