The three of them became Team Avatar shortly after.

When Aang, Katara, and Sokka went to Kyoshi Island, the people there were impressed by Aang being the Avatar. This led to him growing a huge ego, despite telling Katara that he should act the same as he normally did. By trying to impress the girls on the island and saying that she was jealous, Aang lost Katara's respect until she was worried about his safety when he tried to fight an unagi. After it attacked him, he regretted how he acted and Katara forgave him.

Unfortunately, Aang didn't listen to everything that Jeong Jeong told him and accidentally burned Katara.

When Team Avatar met with General Fong, he proposed a plan, in which he would help Aang master the Avatar State, and together, they'd defeat the Fire Lord earlier than planned. While Aang felt like this was what he was supposed to do at first and Sokka supported him, Katara thought that he should master the four elements before fighting Ozai, especially since she was afraid to see him in pain as that was how he had unlocked the Avatar State in the past. She was very upset with his decision and didn't want to be around him for a while. However, he ended up changing his mind, relieving her of her worries.

Shortly after Toph joined Team Avatar, they were pursued by Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai, resulting in them getting little sleep. Toph and Katara already weren't getting along, but due to how tired everyone was, they treated each other worse than they would have if they were well-rested. Once Toph mentioned that their enemies knew where they were due to Appa's shedding making a trail, Aang snapped at her, causing her to leave. He nearly lost his earthbending master as soon as he found her.

After they had kissed during the invasion, Aang hoped they'd become a couple and was disappointed that it hadn't happened. When he confronted Katara about this, she told him that it wasn't the right time, and he kissed her again. Unhappy with how he acted, she walked away, but they would luckily get together shortly after.
