The Infected: King Shazam Resurrects a Long Lost Classic Kirby Hero

As part of DC's Year of the Villain and Batman/Superman, Billy Batson/Shazam -- who was among the first victims of the Batman Who Laughs -- is receiving his own one-shot: The Infected: King Shazam #1, from Sina Grace, Joe Bennett, Belardino Brado and Matt Santorelli.

DC Comics has released a first look at the issue, which you can see below alongside the solicitation for the issue. Although unlettered, the preview reveals the return of Atlas to the DC Universe. The hero will fight the infected Shazam, and it seems as if things won't go well for him.

  • Billy Batson is a good kid. Well… he was. Following the events of Batman/Superman and “Year of the Villain,” Shazam is now one of the Infected! One of DC’s greatest heroes has seen his soul turned black by the Batman Who Laughs—and Shazam’s on a journey to punch a bunch of so-called "gods" in the face and show the establishment exactly what the future looks like. The Infected: King Shazam, from writer Sina Grace (Iceman, Go Go Power Rangers) and artist Joe Bennett (Immortal Hulk), is the first spotlight one-shot focusing on the heroes infected by the Batman Who Laughs, leading the way to the December-debuting Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen!

Created by Jack Kirby, Atlas made his debut in 1975's 1st issue Special #1. The invulnerable hero possesses superhuman strength, much like his counterpart in the Greek mythology. The character's appearances over the years have been quite sporadic.

The Infected: King Shazam #1 releases on November 6.
