The Hunger Games Teaser Doesn’t Tease So Much As It Bores

I admit that I haven’t read The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins’ wildly popular series of young-adult science fiction novels — my sister enjoyed the books, though! — therefore I’m not among the legions breathlessly waiting to see bow-wielding teen heroine Katniss Everdeen spring to life on the big screen. MTV did an excellent job working those fans into a lather with a series of blink-and-you’ll-miss-them snippets from the official “first look,” which finally premiered last night during the Video Music Awards. I imagine countless thousands of devotees, copies of Mockingjay gripped in their sweaty little hands, tuning in to the show, waiting anxiously … only to say, “That’s it?”

Eh, I don’t know, maybe seeing Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence creep through the forest — a dystopian forest! — in 40 seconds of footage that looks like it was captured by a wobbly trail camera was exactly what they were hoping for. On the plus side, though, fire.

Directed by Gary Ross, The Hunger Games also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Willow Shields, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland and a score of others. The film opens March 23, 2012.
