Looks like the folks at Lionsgate are getting hungry for The Hunger Games, as The Hollywood Reporter reveals the studio and distributor’s plan to release their adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling series of young adult novels into theaters on March 23, 2012. The current release date puts Hunger Games into theaters just one week before Jonathan Liebsman’s Clash of the Titans sequel, which could spell trouble for the Sam Worthington-starring follow-up. Although Clash already has an established presence, Hunger Games has an equally rabid fan base that’s arguably even hungrier. It’ll be interesting to see that box office battle play out.
Gary Ross, who you might remember was tapped to write and possibly direct a Venom spinoff for Sony once upon a time, is set to direct Hunger Games, though no casting information is currently available. For those who haven’t read it, The Hunger Games focuses on Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl who finds herself in the midst of an annual tournament called the Hunger Games; as a competitor, Katniss must battle other participants to the death, their struggles for survival televised for all the world to see.
