The red band trailer for The Grudge reboot is not for the faint of heart. It has a lot of bloody moments, making the film's R-rating feel very, very appropriate.

Although the film is being labeled as a reboot, it is not a retelling of the Takashi Shimizu's Ju-on: The Grudge or its 2004 English-language remake. Rather, it exists in a parallel timeline set close to the time of the original, but in an American small town instead of Tokyo.

The disturbing 2-minute clip follows the recent trailer-trend of starting with an extended scene, which follows the film's protagonist Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) after she enters a cursed house. There she meets the old woman who lives in the house, Faith Matheson (Lin Shaye of the Insidious franchise). The detective stumbles upon some pretty gruesome stuff, offering fans a sneak peek of what the movie will deliver in terms of gore and fright.

The trailer takes a quick break from jump-scaring audiences to give them a steamy shower scene featuring John Cho. It's a short, but welcome break from the severed fingers, neck-sawing and plucked out eyeballs, but it doesn't last long -- The Grudge's signature blue fingers finally make an appearance.

The Grudge is written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, with Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Takashige Ichise producing. The film is set to release on Jan. 3, 2020.
